Bubbles in the Clearcoat

Hello everyone. Ralph is inspecting a coach for us and reports that
the clearcoat is peeling. Is this a major repair? How is clearcoat
touched up or can it be "patched"?

From what I know,you can take a section and fine sand it and spray your
clear coat finish over the prepared surface.
The peeling is caused from weather exposure,mainly sun & heat,and it will
probably peel in another place that was exposed to sun for extended periods.
Most peeling is at the upper curve of the body where it meets the roof and
the top half of the rub rails along the side.

Hi,

It has been my experience that the clear coat will
eventually bubble and peel in many areas. You can
stop the irregular shape peeling by "scribing" a more
square/rectangular shape area with a sharp hobby
knife, being careful not to get into the paint below
the top clearcoat paint. Next, "3000 or higher-grit,"
wet sandpaper (NAPA) or automotive rubbing compound or
dry cornstarch gently rubbed with a soft cloth will
take off the old. Don't even think of less than 3000
grit as it will scratch the paint below.

NAPA sells two types of pre-mixed clear coat, one in
a spray can and the other in a fingernail-polish-style
bottle with brush applicator for small touch-up spots.
Be sure to remove all wax before applying either.

If you touch up the clear coat, purchase a clear coat for cured
finish. Most clear coat products must be applied within a fixed
period of time after the color coat. If the colorcoat is not harmed
re clearcoating is unnoticed. The color coat under the clear coat
usually does not have a shine. The clear coat adds the shine and
protect the colorcoat. The best advice in auto finish work is to
read the label and use all the preprep products the Paintsystem
instructions demand.
