Probably an easy question for most

I just bought an '95 42 ft. Bird and I tried to empty the black tank
and it won't open. The manual says to open it manually with a tool
that evidently I didn't get with the coach. How can I empty it? Thanks
in advance.

Hi ?????,

We like to sign our messages here with name, type coach, and location.
I had a '95 WBDA until today when we traded for a new Alpine. Had
the same problem until I bought the new valves from Randy Dupree. I
used a large screwdriver to pry them. once you get them started, they
would open. Just make certain that you have the air pressure up. The
new valves work without the need to pry.

On my coach there is a silver, flat metal bar that is screwed onto
the side wall of the grey water tank compartment. The compartment
that has your valve opening controls. At the end of the bar, there
is a 90 degree angle, the about another 2" length and a half moon
cut-out at the end. You use this to Pry up the stuck valve. If
you don't have one, then as George said, use a big screwdriver.
Air up your coach, and open the valve switch. Gentle prying will
open the valve.

Once open, you need to lubricate it up. And it doesn't help just to
spray lubricant on the shaft. And don't do that!!! That is not
where it sticks. If you go to the wanderlodge owners online site, I
have a excellent pictorial on how to remove and replace, or just
lubricate the valves. It is under the article section, sub-category
repair and maintenance. You may need new valve paddles, and those
can be purchased from Jeff Miller at the Dupree site that John
listed.
