MAXTON / BLUEBIRD / HOT ROD MINI RALLY MARCH 30 TO APRIL 2, 2006
I have been asked for directions to Maxton, NC for the MAXTON /
BLUEBIRD / HOT ROD MINI RALLY by a few people, I want to remind you
that the maps and directions to the race course are available on
Randy Dupree's web site. I have added another map of part of eastern
North Carolina and South Carolina showing where Maxton is located,
but when you come to the Maxton be sure to follow the WRITTEN
DIRECTIONS as it will tell you to give me a call and that I will come
to lead you in to the track, it can be a little difficult to find for
your first time there. Here are the links to the Flyer. Maps and
Written Directions.

Is the "track" at the old Air Force base? Is there still a big
aircraft bone yard at the airport? I used to fly in there years ago
when I was in pilot training, this could bring back some memories.

Hi Dave,

Yes, that would be the place and there are still old aircraft being
dismantled. they had a couple of 747 being salvaged last year and
they even held a hostage rescue exercise on one of them that during
it we were warned to stay in our camp area, as they were using live
ammo during it, they were over a mile from our camping area. That day
there was just a few of us there early at the track, so it wasn't
being done during the actual event, we like to get there on Thursday,
to set up. The Air Force still uses the active runway to practice
touch and goes and they even practiced night vision touch and goes
with a C-17 from nearby Pope AFB during that hostage rescue exercise
early in the morning, that was a site to see, the silhouette of the
plane, with the airport hanger lights in the background, as it
practiced these maneuvers many times with no navigation, or landing
lights, just the sound of chirping tires as it landed and the jet
engines screaming as it took off again.

The area of the old base, now the Laurinburg / Maxton Airport, that
we use to race on is the old runway that is two miles long including
the shutdown area and is located across the airport form the two
active runways, check out the aerial photo of the layout at;

The Golden Knights US Army Parachute Team from nearby Ft. Bragg has
their practice jump facility located just adjacent to the staging
area of the track and they are usually doing practice jumps during
our events, using one of the active runways for their aircraft, you
will have to ask Randy Dupree about the "MOON SHOT" that happened to
one of the US Army aircraft that was doing a landing, unfortunately I
didn't have my camera ready that time.

We hope to see you there, we promise that you will have a good time,
as we always do.
