Jeep Liberty as a TOAD?
I am considering buying an 06 Liberty diesel and have a few questions

Jeep Liberty as a TOAD?
Hey Jim, Hope all is well with you and yours..There is a forum member
that is kinda like the "resident" guru of the jeeps. Jay Darst, He
owns a dealership and in my opinion gives our BB group some
quite "honest and frank" opinions regarding the jeep. Not to mention
that I have spoken with a couple of members that have purchased from
him and they said that he was more than fair with pricing to BB
folks. I am sure he will see your post and respond. Stay well. See

Jeep Liberty as a TOAD?
Hi Jim Scoggins
We have a Liberty CRD purchased this early summer,
previously we had a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The transfer case is manual and is towable.

Our Jeep isn't a Sport or Limited,but has cloth seats and the bumpers and
fenders are not painted but the gray plastic?

It would be good to have skid plates,but not necessary
for us anyway.

The engine is made in Italy and used widely in Europe for various applications,
including Chrysler cars and vans and and of course Jeep. I read somewhere the
company is a joint venture of Daimler and Penske.

I don't know of any suspension issues and would think this is the same Liberty
as when it was first introduced some years back.Seat spotting is not an issue as
any cloth seat is subject to this problem.Leather would be better for us,but
there weren't any around when we bought our Liberty.I haven't thought of
Scotchguard,but it may work.
I am working on some solution to the brake noise and have concluded it is the
material they used on the pads and may change the pads later to see if it
helps.I live on a graded road and that doesn't help either.I found that blowing
out the brake caliper area with compressed air is the best way to keep it quiet
for about a week and then it comes back gradually.Chrysler will fix
this,eventually.The initial 6000 miles it used up 2 quarts of oil and I thought
2 quarts was too much,and talking with the service writer at 2 Jeep agencies it
is normal for the 12000 mile break in period.
I am deep into my second 6000 miles and there has been no oil usage yet.

The service interval is 6000 miles or 6 months,they are using Mobil One
synthetic so an oil change at the dealer is costly.I have found the oil at
Costco or Sams Club for about 4 dollars a quart.

I have become accustomed to the feel of the Liberty and now really enjoy driving
it.At first I was comparing it too much to the Grand Cherokee but have let go of
that thought.

I think for our purpose,the Sport whatever model ours is badged is more
suitable.If only that the cladding is not painted and if it gets beat up from
towing,the cladding and/or bumpers are just replaced without any painting.

Hi Jim,
We are looking at purchasing a Jeep Libery Diesel as well. We
are hoping to find a rental company to do a weekend rental to test
drive it over several hundred miles to make sure the ride is going
to be confortable. We need a toad replacement so that is why were
are looking at the liberty. One question I have is do I need four
wheel drive to be able to pull? Please keep the group informed. We
are seeing 2006 pricing in the low 21k. Maybe Jay will be able to
give us a better deal. If you talk to him, let him know we are in
the market as well.

Hi Jim.
Been offroading a Landrover for the past nine years, once in CA otherwise in
NA. Bought the factory shop manual for it and found a section on the VM 2.5
liter diesel engine. VM stands for Vancini and Martelli, a 50 year company
in the north of Italy that makes these engines. Their engines have been in
North America for thirty years in industrial and marine applications. They
were recently bought by Detroit Diesel of Cento, Italy. These engines are
widely used in Brazil in Ford Ranger pickup trucks. Engines are manufactured
using robotics in Cento.

I got tired of waiting for this engine in a LWB Rubicon and went on and
bought the gas, but still waiting.

Noticed that the cam timing is driven by a tooth belt instead of a chain.
Not to my liking. Good luck.

Jim,

Met you at RIV2003, once in the fair grounds, I was parked about 3
busses behind you on the same side of the street...

Anyhow, Jeep Liberty Diesel Toads...
Great fuel mielage, great power, not noisey, burn clean, lotsa
torque AND horsepower, decent room, slightly narrower than Grand
Cherokee, Still enough room for 6' driver and passenger. These are
very agile, easy to manuever, turn very sharp. So far, we have had
comparitively less trouble with Libery's than other vehilces. My
service manager will say they don't get much warranty on the Liberty.

We've sold only a hand full of the Diesels. I have personally
followed up with these owners, wanted good information about their
experience with the diesel. EVERY one of them are VERY satisfied
with their Liberty CRD.

If you shop the used market for a Liberty, the 2004's have a pretty
choppy ride. The 2005 and newer Liberty's ride far better!

The Liberty Sport, which is considered the base unit, is actually
very well equipped. The list of standard equipment is L O N G.
A/C, 20.5gal fuel tank, am/fm/cd w/6 speakers, multi-stage air bags,
all speed traction control, 4 wheel anti-lock brakes, Cargo tie down
loops, command trac HD transfer case, electronic stability program,
floor mats, tinted glass, full size spare, halogens heradlamps,
power convenience group(illuminated entry,pwr mirrors-that can fold,
remote keyless entry, speed sensitive pawer locks), power windows,
rear defroster and wiper, lighted vanity mirrors, tilt wheel, tinted
glass, intermittent wipers, and Trail Rated.(trail rated with regard
to the following 4 areas: Traction-Articulation-Ground Clearance-
Water Fording)

All this for a base list price of $25,780, invoice is $24,493

My Bluebird buddies from around the country would pay only $21,993
plus tax, lic & title in your state. This is invoice less $1,500 in
midwest rebate and less $1,000 Chrysler Financial cash(Rebate).
Chrysler financial cash is avaulable contingent on you financing
with them for a period(not less than 3 months).

The Liberty's that are 20K or under are gas 2x4 6spd, base, base,
base. Not towable easily.

Tow this unit by placing the transfer case in neutral.

Thanks to the rest of you for your kind words, appreciate all the
help I can get! Factory sets me up each month when we exceed our
volume quota. Example: dealers in my zone sold 65% of their quota,
we sold 230%, with second place selling 110%. There was no 3rd
place, not even close.

So if I'm going to sell a few at cost, they're going to some good
people who maybe would not have come to IL to buy their next new
ride had they not got a GREAT deal.

We have Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Buick-Pontiac-GMC, so good variety all
at 1 location! We are just west of I-57 on Route 121, near Mattoon,

Jeep Liberty as a TOAD?
Jay, great post..That is why I suggested they contact you ...I like
the NO BS approach for the BB owners..Thanks (now if I just got my
300M from you we would be getting somewhere) Smile Make plans to come to
