Toilet questions
My FC rear bath has a Thetford toilet that I assume is the original
one. It works fine, with the exception of the fact that it will no
longer hold water in the bowl.

1) Is there a seal or something that can be replaced to stop the
leaking? Is that a big ordeal?

2) How is the toilet removed? I plan on putting in a new tile floor
(and a new toilet if I can't fix this one). Where are the bolts?

Thanks

Toilet questions
Hi Scott,

First, go to <http://www.thetford.com> and look up the service instructions
for your model of toilet. It is quite common for the groove in the
seal to get gunk in it that keeps the valve from closing completely.
It is easy to clean - they even make a special tool to do it but a
paperclip works in many cases.

For removal, the plastic front cover snaps off and the bolts are
behind that. Should be covered in the service instructions.

Hope this helps,

Hi Scott:

A 3/16th allen wrench fits the seal grove perfectly. Turn off your water
supply, hold the ball open and clean the grove. This should take care of
the seal leakage problem.

On the original Thetford there is a nut accessible if you look below
the foot-pedals, the other nut can be reached either by reaching into
the back of the toilet, or by removing the round cap which you see
when the seat is lifted, and using a long extension on your ratchet.

The water shutoff is under the sink vanity, not sure whether the '82
is by opening the door under the vanity or by lifting a panel below
the bottom shelf in the vanity, it's been a while.

Toilet questions
Hello Scott:
I had exactly the same problem with my thetford, was out on a multi
month trip in the boonies and the odor getting to me, I almost
bought a replacement toilet until when I figured out that some paper
had gotten wedged in the seal cavity, I mean REALLY jammed as I had
done my best to fully close knife seal by pulling UP on the peddle
many times over several weeks - (I don't recommend you try this
technique Smile ). I tried a paper clip, right angle pick, Allen
wrench and about a dozen other items to clear it. Finally ran into
a RV place that had a thetford tool, its a long screwdriver with the
end bent on a 90 deg angle. It was ridiculously expensive but I
negotiated to $15.00 (I don't think the guy had sold another one all
year, most everybody makes there own) and had the paper cleared from
the groove in minutes - the toilet has worked 100% for 2 years -
LOTS cheaper and less mess than a new toilet! I hope your problem
is a simple to solve.
