Lug nut torque
I had new tires installed last July and I'm sure they said the wheels
were torqued to 250 ft lbs and the manual states 375-425. I prefer to do things myself when possible so I am looking for some suggestions what other owners do. Any suggestions for decent impact wrenchs, torque stick and procedures are appreciated. I am considering harbor freights 1" Central Pneumatic wrench ITEM 92622-2VGA : http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/di...mber=92622 and this torque stick : http://www.torquestick.com/cart/customer...t=1&page=1 Troy 1983 FC 33 Waconia, MN |

Lug nut torque
Troy,
I remember a discusion some time back about the X12 (times 12) wrench. It's a torque multiplier that fits over the lug nut and allows someone to loosen/tighten lugnuts with a 1/2" drive ratchet. They're quite expensive, $795.00, but maybe cheaper than a 1" air impact wrench. As I remember, it also allowed the use of 1/2" drive torque wrench rather than a five foot lever to achieve the desired torque. Didn't see a link on this forumm, you might check on the other yahoo wanderlodge site or google it. Portable, compact and it doesn't require a high volume compressor (actually it doesn't require a compressor at all). Just another option to consider. Unless you have a large air compressor you will not be able to use
harbor freights torque wrench. That impact wrench requires a compressor that will deliver 12-14 Cu ft/minute at 100PSI. Forget about using it. I have a torque multiplier X12 and some Snapon torque wrenches. Its easy to take the lug nuts off and on and torque them to the correct torque. I use anti-seize on the threads and torque to 425 ft #. tom warner 1982 FC35 Vernon Center,NY At 05:45 PM 2/28/2006, you wrote: >I had new tires installed last July and I'm sure they said the wheels >were torqued to 250 ft lbs and the manual states 375-425. Regarding the impact wrench.
Ingersoll Rand 2135Ti half inch drive 625 foot pounds of torque clock wise 1000 foot pounds counter clock wise weighs about 3.95 pounds (the socket weighs as much as the wrench) 7 vane titanium motor 10,000 rpm free speed I have removed all wheels from a car without the air compressor cycling has four torque settings, I skip the torque wrench procedure less than 250 dollars, no brainer. removed all nuts from my bus that were put on with my brothers one inch drive, D handled, IR behemoth. dandarst86fc35rbhuntleyil. >From: "ttikalsky" >Reply-To: WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com >To: WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com >Subject: [WanderlodgeForum] Lug nut torque >Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2006 22:45:33 -0000 > >I had new tires installed last July and I'm sure they said the wheels >were torqued to 250 ft lbs and the manual states 375-425. I carry the X12 in my coach, it'll snap a stud before it'll give up,
I believe that it is rated for 3,500ft-lbs max. Good wrench, but heavy (I think the X12 is 17lbs) and slow. I use an air rachet (not impact) to run the nuts off once loose, and on before final torquing. I also carry a pre-set click-type torque wrench, set to 1/10th (45ft- lbs) so that I can use it with the X12, it came that way, nice for final-torque on the nuts. Remember that the left nuts are left-hand- thread, so your stuff will have to be reverseable, lubricated torque is reduced from dry-thread torque, and be sure to keep the wheel-hub mating surface clean and dry as well as the ball-seat on the nuts, lubrication can be on the threads ONLY. - Jeff Miller in Holland, MI --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Jim Owens" wrote: > > Troy, > > I remember a discusion some time back about the X12 (times 12) wrench. > It's a torque multiplier that fits over the lug nut and allows > someone to loosen/tighten lugnuts with a 1/2" drive ratchet. > They're quite expensive, $795.00, but maybe cheaper than a 1" air > impact wrench. Also on the X12 site if they still have it, buy the little dog-leg
thing that you put on the nut if the inner nut comes loose so that you can get the nuts off, might save your can some time out there if an outer nut gets stuck on an inner nut (ball-seat type, mid-2001 and older I believe). - Jeff Miller in Holland, MI --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Jeff Miller" wrote: > > I carry the X12 in my coach <<snip>> |

I added one more part to what Jeff noted. The special socket to
hammer over the broken stud so it can be backed out. Without it you are just plan SOL if you break a stud and dont have one. Last time I snapped a stud had a fellow that specializes in wheel service come and he charged me $70 to remove it. I bought a new socket the next day for $40. If studs have been in for a long time or have been in the salt takes over a 1000 ft # to break them loose and the X12 will do it or break them off. Carry a few extra inner and outer studs with you they are cheap insurance if you need them. Before I went to the expense od buying a 1" impact that you bus air will not power. You will need a compressor that can handle a 3/4" air line and light wieght for that gun is some where around 30 to 40 pounds. You manual mentioned 375- 425lbs/ft torque as oppossed to the shop doing them at 250/ Several factors come into play 1. What type wheels did it have when it left the plant in 1983. 2. Have the wheels always been torgued. If it left with steel wheels and you have durabright now that will change the torgue value. Each time a nut is tightend onto it stude if it is over torqued two things happen it over sress the stud hence broken studes and the second is to much stress on the surronding area. I would contact the wheel manufacture to find out what there torque value is, the talk to the "local tool man about a good 1/2 torque inch and a torque multiplier like was previous sugested. If you are going to pull your own tires the tool man can set you up with a high quality impact that will do the job with your impact. When I was with working people I could break tractor lugs loose with by 1/2 in IR244. Did not Like to do it all the time due to the beating it put on the gun.
