Kerry, i used a tow dolly and went all over the country. They are a bit of a
pain but I had no problems. Ernie-83pt40 in louisiana

I'll be wanting to tow something behind the Bird. My wife drives 1977 MB 300d
and I drive an 85 MB 300td. Both have auto transmissions so aren't towable 4
wheels down. Is a tow dolly a reasonable option or are they just too much of a
pain in the neck? Would it be better to buy a cheap older stick shift car and
tow it with a tow bar? Other options?

I tow a 76 240D, use a Remco decoupler on the rear drive shaft at the rear
pinion. Makes a nice neat package.
By the way, don't think about removing the turbo on your NA. Keep the pyrometer
under 1000 degrees and you will be all good, if temp exceeds 1000, reduce
throttle opening or down shift. Operate the engine 1800 on the low side, 2650
on the high side and you will be fine. As you have a after market turbo, it
would be pretty easy to install an air to air charge air cooler and that would
be a real good thing, particularly for reducing exhaust smoke. People that go
by the creed of "you can't hurt a diesel running on the governor", tend to buy
new engines.

Can you describe the Remco decoupler? Are they hard to install? Cost?

So far, I concur on the turbo. Only one short steep hill driving it
home but the pyro did not reach 1000 degrees. Unless is starts
exceeding it regularly, I'm planning to leave it on. I have to get
another boost gauge and check the boost. Current gauge is either not
working correctly or boost is very low. Haven't been able to figure
out yet whether it has a wastegate and if it does, how it functions.
Emissions test showed 14% opacity at all speeds so it is running very
clean at the moment

Kerry check out http://www.remcotowing.com They could have other options for you
MBs like drive shaft decouplers and tranny lube pumps.
