Eaton Power Steering Pump- 83FC
It's time to replace the leaking power steering pump in our 83FC. Any
idea where I can purchase one at a decent price? Also, has anyone ever just replaced the seals? Thanks, Steve H. Kingwood Tx |

Eaton Power Steering Pump- 83FC
Thanks for posting this Steve, I'm about to do the same thing to my 83'.
It seems that the power steering pump is the weakest part of the 3208 powerplant. I just bought an 83 and drove it home from Ohio leaking power steering fluid all the way. The ps pumps appear to be underdesigned for our coaches. I'm also worried that the placement of the reservior over the engine makes the fluid too hot - thus making the pump fail sooner. Has anybody upgraded their PS pump with a more heavy duty unit? Or have any modifications that actually worked well? Any help is appreciated for both Steve and myself! Steve first are you sure it is not the hose connections that are
leaking instead of the seals? Thats all that was wrong with mine. Texas power steering at 3800 N McCarty, Houston,Tx 1-800-331-6286 rebuilds them. I believe Ed Woods is still there. Steve,
Talk to Bill at Bab Steering <http://www.babstering.com> He is the most knowledgeable person I have found on power steering and is most helpful. Though their home office is in Fontana, CA, They have several other plants scattered around the country. He has helped me on several problems and has always solved the situation at a reasonable cost. Andy,
As I mentioned to Steve in an earlier post, contact Bill at Bab Steering <http://www.babsteering.com> He tells me that there are a number of people killed each year because of mismatched power steering components. He helped me to match the correct components in my coach - made a difference like night & day. Eaton Power Steering Pump- 83FC
Steve,
What timing. I just wrote an article about this for the Wanderlodge Owners Online site (wanderlodge(dot)us). While I believe the pump is a little undersized for the Wanderlodge, it performs well in a properly vented system. The 225-250 horse FC's for some reason received a non-vented reservoir. This places undue stress on the seals and hose fittings. Any pump shop can rebuild it for you. I've sent out two and paid about $170 each. It's nice to have a good thorough check out since the pump does work hard, and it's the only one you've got. Shop around in your area for prices. I'd replace the hoses, belt, filter (NAPA), and install a vent with the rebuild. Steve and Andy, I think the most strain on hoses and pumps, and
cause of early failure is when a driver turns the wheel in a motionless bus. I fear a more powerful pump will allow a driver to blow a hose or fitting too easy. Andy, come'on- pick up a mid size wire feed welder. You will look at every project through a autodark. leak was not the pump in my case, but the return lines were leaking through the lines themselfs.i had to remove the batteries, then drop down the panel that holds the wire connectors to get to the steering box to remove the lines, the old return line broke into 8 pieces when i removed it.if anyone is changing pumps, make sure you change the lines as well.after replacing the lines i have no leaks, the previous owner was thinking it needed the pump and the steering box rebuilt. something else i have done for many years is to add STP to my PS system, just 1/2 of a can to the fluid already in there,it quiets down the pumps, and it stopped the jerky feel at slow speeds in the fc. randy > > Thanks for posting this Steve, I'm about to do the same thing to my 83'. > > It seems that the power steering pump is the weakest part of the 3208 > powerplant. > > I just bought an 83 and drove it home from Ohio leaking power steering > fluid all the way. > > The ps pumps appear to be underdesigned for our coaches. > > I'm also worried that the placement of the reservior over the engine > makes the fluid too hot - thus making the pump fail sooner. > > Has anybody upgraded their PS pump with a more heavy duty unit? Eaton Power Steering Pump- 83FC
I used a Saginaw pump off a old medium duty Chevy truck and a steering box off
an old Louisville L8000 on the FC 31' gas I'm restoring. The retrofit was pretty simple and required no welding, just a 1/2" adapter plate, that was fabbed up on a burning table and four 3/4" bolts to the frame. It don't squeal when I turn the wheel with the bird motionless, quite unlike the FC 35. I'm pleasantly surprised and I might look into making the change to the 35. Saginaw pumps are more plentiful than the limey piece BB used. When a new pump is installed it is critical to thoroughly bleed all air out of the system before placing in service.
