1988 FC35 fuel filters and Racor location

I am putting together a list of oil and fuel filters to keep as spares
for my Bird. I found all the part #,s for the Cat and the Onan. BUT I
also found some old tech bulletin about using the 1P2299 as a primary
filter. Apparently the micron rating has changed on this filter. Left
me confused! As for the racor: My Bird is sitting rather low right now
and I do not want to disturb the neighbors by starting the engine to
air it up. Dumb question: Where is that racor located? I am assuming it
is somewhere along the drivers side frame rail? Which model Racor is on
my coach? My manual says it uses a a Racor 2040SM filter. I found a
small fuel filter in a box marked NAPA 3166. I cannot cross this filter
to any Cat or Onan #'s. It is a drop in cartridge and very small. Any
ideas? Could be from the previous owners tractor??

That 3166 fuel filter is common on medium size tractors and most likely
fit anywhere on your Blue Bird.

Not sure about the 88 but look next to the propane tank. Do you know what the
racor looks like?

Yes I know what it looks like. Thank you I found it beside the propane
tanks behind a panel. Not too easy to service.

Bruce,

That 3166 is a drop in fuel filter for a Perkins engine and should be used
on your generator if you have that engine on it. The Racor 2040SM is a 2
micron fuel filter and is what Blue Bird used on many of their coaches. You
will probably also have a filter on the Cat engine. Not sure what that
number is.

I think the Napa 3166 is a spin on filter, It may be in the wrong
box, It may also fit the Onan, (if it is a spin on filter).
But I use a NAPA 3392 spin on filter for the Onan, it has a drain at
the bottom for dirt & water.
If the filter you have is a corrigated cartridge it may fit the
power steering fluid canister.
Or possibly the ZF trans, this is an expensive wire mesh cartridge.

The Racor 2040SM is a Brown 2 micron, I use the 2040TM Blue 10
micron, The 2040 PM is Red 30 micron.
I use a Cat, 2 micron 1R-0750 on the 3208.
All these numbers cross to NAPA, sometimes you get an original Racor
filter, sometimes Wix, by ordering the same number from NAPA.

Bill: Here is that engineering bulletin I found:

Newer Caterpillar engines equipped with electronic fuel injection
systems previously using the BF7525 now use the Baldwin BF7633
(Caterpillar 1R0750), while the older Caterpillar engines with
mechanical fuel injection systems still use the Baldwin BF970
(Caterpillar 1P2299).

The BF7525 provided a direct replacement for the Caterpillar 1R0740
fuel filter. The 1R0740 was considered an upgrade to the Caterpillar
1P2299 fuel filter because it provided longer service life. Baldwin
Filters met the performance of the 1R0740 by designing the BF7525
with the capacity to provide 20% longer service life than the BF970.
However, the design of the BF970 fuel filter eventually evolved to
match the service life of the BF7525. The current BF970 and BF7525
utilize the same filtering element, providing equal filtration
efficiency and filter service life. With the performance of these two
filters being equal, the logical choice is to obsolete one of the
part numbers to save on inventory and manufacturing costs.

Caterpillar's introduction of the 1R0750 provided a high efficiency
fuel filter that is now used in place of the 1R0740 on Caterpillar
engines equipped with electronic fuel injection systems. Please
refer to Engineering Bulletin 98-2 for more information regarding the
high efficiency fuel filters. Since the 1P2299 is still used on
Caterpillar engines with mechanical fuel injection systems, there was
no need to continue the 1R0740 fuel filter. Therefore, Caterpillar
discontinued the 1R0740. In response to Caterpillar's action, Baldwin
Filters chose to obsolete the BF7525 and continue the BF970. This
also allows us to consolidate two identical part numbers into one and
remain consistent with Caterpillar's recommendations.

Please make note of this change in your current Baldwin Filters
Application Guide and look for these changes in your future orders of
Baldwin filters.
