Matt,

Assuming your engine turns over, but won't fire...I had a similar problem,
and it was the air actuated solenoid that controls the air intake into the
engine (simpler terms). You can locate this solenoid by opening the engine
hood, and you'll easily see this solenoid about mid-engine, just below eye
height, but toward the rear of the engine (back of the bus). Take a longer
handled
screwdriver, and push lightly against the plunger, and it should slide over
to the other side. I did this on mine, and it cranked over and fired up in
about one second. Let me know if you have trouble locating this solenoid, let
us know. I'd give you a more descriptive explaination, but I can't open the
engine compartment on my BB right now because it's backed up to a fence...in
the spirit of this forum, I'll go out and fire her up and pull forward a
little if needed. Let me know.....

Matt,

Additionally....this only happened once to me, and not again since, and I
didn't have to buy or replace anything. I think I squirted some WD40 on the
plunger is all I did. The single click you hear from the engine compartment
when you turn the ignition key "on" I believe is this solenoid. This happened
to someone else about a year ago, the same advice was given, which fixed the
problem that time also.

Good luck...let us know if it worked.

Hey all I have a 1986 pt 40 with 8v92 and a allison 4sp ATEC I parked
it in the fall and now it wont start with fully charged batteries and
working starter etc! The only good clue I have is that the key pad for
the tranny wont light up at all as I remember it lights up in N when
the key is turned is this the case or is my memory slipping? Also the
check tranny light comes on is this normal??? Were will one find the
fuse for the ATEC?
Thanks all

Matt: Your saying that the engine turn's over but won't fire? I don't
think I would worry too much about the transmisson until I got the
engine running. It's doubtful that you developed two problem's at the
same time. and I don't believe them to be related. The check tranny
light coming on is normal as part of the annunciator test. Did you
pre-
heat the engine? How long did you try cranking it? Are you sure the
batteries are at Max strength?....need more info..Bob 93pt Il.

Thanks for all the help to answere a few questions it will not turn
over with the key ignition front or back. The starter will turn if
shorted by hand (dont try this at home LOL). I followed the wiring for
Atec from the tranny all the way to the front compartment where the
air service brake valve is located and a ton of wires. When I
unscrewed all the fasteners and opened the front of the bus I was
greeted with a whole lot of rodent trash in nice bright colors (wire
insulation) soooo..... I think I found my problem the Atec harness is
no longer. Thanks all now to rebuild and see if the electronics held
up to it when I tried to start the bus.
THANKS ALL

Matt: Don't forget the AT switch. make sure it's in the on position.
You'll still get the annuciation lights even with this off, only thing
is the starter won't work. As you mentioned you can jump the starter at
the solonid and make it spin which would be normal even with the AT
switch off. Working on Transmission wiring and Engine start at the same
time, make sure you don't compound your problem's..Good luck...Bob93pt
