No horn

[Gardner Yeaw]

I just brought my new 78FC home and the main horn does not work. (not
the air or musical horns which I knew didn't work). I haven't looked
yet, but does anyone know where the wire from the horn button on the
steering wheel exits the stering column? The horn only beeped once
while we were doing the final run through, so I assume there is a poor
connection or the button has failed.

Check the air/electric horn toggle switch on the dash, maybe it's in
the "air" position?

Gardner,

On the '78 FC I had, I occasionally had to remove the horn button and
push it back in. There was not a very good ground connection between
the button and the steering wheel hub.

Bob,

I flipped the switch between the trhee settings several times. I
plan to follow the circuit and test continuity along the way. For now
I only need the electric horn for state safety inspection so I may
wire it around the switch if that is the problem.

I will check that as well. I suppose the horn button just 'pops'
out with a little encouragement from a thin blade?
I will be at the storage facility tonight and will see what I can
do.

Well, it wasn't operator error after all. The horn works
intermittently. I have a second Bluebird horn button, but that is
not the problem. I checked with an ohm meter and the button works
fine. There is an intermittent connection between (I believe) the
horn button and the dash switch. I noticed when the horn worked the
air horn relay or solenoid clicked when the switch was in that
position, and when the horn fails and I flip the switch, the air
horn relay doesn't work either.

Where does the horn wire exit the stering column? Does the
circuit have a slip ring or other method of transfering the
connection from the rotating steering column?
