Screw, 87-89 FC, Grille, possibly other apps.
The grille on the 87 Forward Control is held in place
by (16) 1-5/8"x1/4-20" thread dog tipped screws. The dog tip acts as guide to facilitate easy threading in the rivet nuts, (riv nuts). After removal, a close examination of the screw thread with a magnifying glass showed the area cut, "the dog",caused the start thread to be almost touch the adjoining thread. This was found attempting to start a 1/4-20 nut on the screw by hand, wouldn't turn. Of the 16, only 5 could be turned by hand. This has wallowed out the threads of the riv nuts and in some cases caused the nuts to seize on the threads rendering them useless and a pain to remove. Remedy: Remove the screws then test each one by hand turning a nut onto the screw. If not possible I found it easier to use a 3/16" allen wrench to hold the screw then with a 7/16" wrench turn the nut. If you try to use a die to chase the threads before using the nut you will damage the screw. Riv nuts are aluminum with steel threads, there is steel to steel contact with screw and nut but still oxidation, rust. I recommend coating the threads with an anti seize compound, it will help some to make the next removal easier. Now on to the riv nuts. Bob Janes, 87FC35, Greenville, SC |
