Curt:
The owner of the shop that performs my heavy maintenance talked me into a new
pump, about $495.00 a year ago(plus labor and all new hoses) I didn't want to
spend that kind of money but decided that 8v92 in front of the water pump is
very, very expensive.

A new water pump from Detroit for the 8V92 is over $500.00. I'm finding
rebuilt pump prices from $140 to $225. Are there rebuilders categorized
as good, bad?

I believe our 87 8V92 water pumps are the WALKING, not standing, water pump. Below is a link to part numbers, don't know if they are Detroit part numbers.

Try Google for "8V92 water pump", or "Detroit 92 series water pump"

Call Stewart & Stevenson in Dallas or Wichita Falls. Give them the
engine S/N. They should be able to give you the pump part number.
