Resize Photos for upload to Forum
Photo Re-sizing for Web Sites
By R.E. (Ron) Marabito

Here on the Yahoo Wanderlodge Forum, we have a severe
limitation on photo file sizes and it is necessary to make sure
everyone on the Forum can easily do this when they want to upload a
photo. What we need to do of course is to limit the file sizes to
25Kb in size. There are numerous FREE software packages that do
this as well as Photo Editing programs such as PhotoShop, PhotoShop
Elements and even Microsoft Office Picture Manager that many of you
have as a part of Microsoft Office.

The simplest software for folks using Windows XP is a
Microsoft Power Toys software called Image Resizer. Just go to
Google and put the name in. It is really neat and easy. Just right
click on a photo and then select Resize Picture. It will give you
several options. Just select Small or Handheld PC. It shows the
screen sizes in Pixels. Click OK and it automatically saves the new
photo to the same folder. It is now ready to upload to email or a
web site. When you get to the web site, there are several toys
listed on the right side of the screen. Click on Image Resizer and
download. What is really neat is the fact that you can resize on-
the-fly when working in a document. Pause in your document, go to
photos and right click on it to resize and then insert the photo
right after it is saved.

I don't have any experience with members using Mac
Computers, but according to Mike Bulriss, PhotoShop and PhotoShop
Elements are available for those computers.

Other FREE software includes the following and then some:

Picasa2
Irfanview
PIXresizer
Jury-Rigged Photo re-sizing
Photo Resizer by Photo Album Software

Since Mike Bulriss has experience with Picasa2 he sent me
the following:

Picasa2 works only on PC's and is one of the best free
software products available. You can download it from Google.com by
clicking on the "more" or "other" tab on the far top right of the
search bar. When you first download it, Picasa scans your computer
for picture files and catalogs them for viewing and access. Simply
pick a picture by clicking on it. Then under "File", click "Export"
to place a copy in a file from which you will upload to the Forum.
When you click on the "Export" you will be given the opportunity to
select the pixel count of 300 to make the picture size about 25 Kb.
You should upload the picture to the Forum Photo Section.

With Microsoft Office Picture Manager, simply go to My
Documents/ My Photos and right click on a photo you wish to re-size
and select Open Photo. This will open the photo in Picture
Manager. Select Picture from the menu across the top. This will
open a drop down list of commands. Click on resize. This will open
a menu on the right side of the screen. Under "Resize Settings"
select the arrow under Predefined Width and Height for a selection.
Select the Email – large and it will give you a file about 25Kb.
You can select a smaller one, but it might look pixilated when
uploaded. You have to save the image.

For those having PhotoShop, just go to file browser, select
a photo. On the menu across the top of the screen, select Image and
a drop-down list of commands will appear. Select Image Size. Pick
a size of pixels for either the width or height of the photo. Make
the longest edge of the photo a maximum of 300 pixels and save the
photo as a JPEG and title it Web-Small or Email. You can then
upload this image to the web site.

PhotoShop Elements should be similar.

I hope this is helpful and all the photos uploaded to our
Forum will be the proper size, preventing us from running out of
space.
