Bob- didn't your coach come with Konis? If so they are adjustable. On my
coach, when i was at Steve Gureaskos', we adjusted 1 shock and replaced another-
made agreat difference

How do I determine which Bilsteins will fit our '84 FC31 WLII?

The rear axle is air suspension and is no doubt the same setup as
other '84 FCs.

The front axle is leaf springs and probably the same as FCs just before
BB started using air suspension (81? 82?).

As always, thanks for the help!

Hey Bob, Happy New Year to you and Sandy.

Below is the correspondence I had with Koni recently. (Read from bottom up)
As you know, my 79 does not have air suspension either front or back. I
replaced the fronts this week and have not had the opportunity yet to drive it
since so at this point I am unable to say if there is a difference. I do know
there was a substantial difference in the resistance by hand. The originals on
my coach were Gabriels per the original manual. The replacements were crossed
from those numbers. I replaced the rears with Monroes as Koni says they do
not have a replacement that size. I did drive the coach after replacing the
rears only and noticed a significant difference, so, I am eager to see the
difference with the fronts replaced.

I purchased my stainless steel top hats from Mansker Tires (Les Schwaub). I
don't know if they were a standard stock item for them, but they did have them
in stock that day.

We have a front shock that is pretty close to the specifications of the
Gabriel shock (based on an aftermarket catalog). Please see the
following:
BB # 614966 = Monroe 74028
lMax = 22.625
lMin = 14.625
Koni 90 2256SP1
lMax = 22.52
lMin = 14.80

Our shock was designed for the front axle of a transit bus, so it should
be close to what you need. It is also adjustable, in case you need more
force to control the bouncing.

The rear shock is a little more difficult
BB #614974 = Monroe 74006
lMax = 21.625
lMin = 14.25

We don't have a Koni shock that is close to that.

You may have to call Bluebird about the rear, and see if they know if
there is a Koni equivalent to the Bluebird number. What they should
know (that I don't) is where the actual limits to the suspension are...
What is the lowest the shock can go, and what is the nominal height of
the shock?

If I get the dimensions wrong either way, you could rip the shocks
apart.

The fronts have a suggested list of $206, but you can get them through
is for $165 each. Just call 866.566.4175 and ask for customer service.

Hope this helps.

Comments : I would like to purchase a set of KONI adjustable shocks for
my 1979 Blue Bird motorhome. The original coach shocks were Gabriel
brand. The part numbers I have for the front shocks are Gabriel part no.
0680054 with a Blue Bird part no. 0614966. The stroke on these front
shocks is 8.76 in. The Gabriel part no for the rear shocks is 680010,
with a Blue Bird part no. of 0614974. The stroke for the rears is 7.51
in. I will also need the bushings for all these shocks if they do not
come with the shocks. Please let me know the Koni part numbers, the cost
of these parts and how I can purchase them. VR Steve Anderson
