More on 'check engine' light

More on 'check engine' light
Thanks for your suggestions. When the problem started I suspected fuel
quality problems ... been holdin' out for lower diesel price for way
too long. Fuel drained from Racor revealed chunks of algae ... changed
both filters, put in Bio-cide, & $614 of diesel. Still get the
intermittent 'check engine' light on constantly which causes tach to be
inoperative & speed to be resticted to 37 mph. Next time I switch it on
the light will function properly & everything works normal.

When the light works correctly & I read the DDEC II codes with
the 'test engine' switch I get 16, 31, 32, 43, 44, 64, 66, 68, & 85.
You'd think it was near death ... Cranks up & comes 75 miles without
missing a stroke. Next morning all fluids are OK, cranks up & comes 100
miles to home without any problems. Switch it off & back on & 'check
engine' light stays on.

The pattern when giving problems is: Initial turning on ignition -
'stop engine' light does NOT come on momentarily but 'check engine'
light stays on constantly. Tach doesn't work & speed limited to 37 mph.

re: the question about me being an agronomist ... if I had $$$ I'd hire
someone to fix the problem instead of trying to steal ideas from
you "master mechanics". naaaaa ... I'm in the seed cleaning &
distribution business. A "tinkerer" also ...

My understanding of the algae in fuel system is that you have to
treat it like you did but you will continue to clog filters till you
have passed all the algae thru your filtering system. You should
keep a spare or two on your bus all times since you don't know when
your filter will be completely clogged and leave you on the side of
the road.

More on 'check engine' light
The codes you got all mean something. The combination of codes and
your diary of symptoms will be great help to a trained DD tech. Many
codes are a result of the shutdown and a good tech will know the
story. We can offer 50 suggestions for you to try and poking around
you may accidently fix the problem. I fear a repair by accident
because I never know if it is truly fixed. You may be able to
schedule an apointment to have a diagnosis done at a shop while you
wait or call a Mobile tech.

I use mobile mechanics to do work on my equipment for several
reasons. I can stand over them ;answer questions, ;make decisions on
repairs ;run parts ;assist the pro and learn,. A service call is
$60.00 + for travel which is about the same cost of fuel and time
moving the bus in and back and being picked up and dropped off. My
repair does not get sidelined for someone 'more important' or 'better
looking'. (not that that could happen) You may have noticed bigRig
trucks being worked on by pickuptruck driving mechanics, in or around
the parking lots of Nappa parts stores. Many mobile mechanics will
revisit you to do the repair near the parts store to save time and
your money.


Agronomist? I asked because we grow and collect seeds for native
erosion control, revegetation. We have a staining and pregermination
process that is 'state of the art'

HI Steve:

16: Coolant level Sensor Voltage high
31; Engine break output open circuit or short to ground
32; CEL or SEL Short to battery or open circuit
43; Low Coolant
44: Oil or coolant high temp
64: No code
66: Engine knock sensor
68: Idle validation switch open or short to ground
85: Engine over speed

Too many faults reported and this to my mind makes it the input 12 vdc
opening and closing with a spike. The 12vdc is on the DDL plug to the DDEC
on pin H circuit 440. There is a circuit breaker located on the back of the
fire wall, have to trace it out, that supplies the 12vdc and it may be
faulty (known to happen) or you have a bouncing ground with is pin A on the
DDL circuit 150. I am thinking it is the connector corroded to the 12vdc
that is reporting your problem and taking the engine to the default rpm
ergo; 37mph speed. The DDEC may be located at the bottom of the back closet
or on the top of the engine located center top near the back compartment door.

Many of us are, well, tinkerers. I had mnay problems with "codes"
some of the problems were real, it seemed that some were due to
connection problems with the harness which plugs into the unit on the
top of the engine...some of the wire/pins were loose and so somtimes
codes somtimes not??????

thanks Ralph ... I agree that the codes seem 'bogus' ... nothing
happened to cause fault codes ... short of not using the coach. I
just noticed that LEG 2 AC ampmeter on the generator gauges showed 40
amps with no load like a/c, water heater, etc. Traced it to floresent
lights in hallway (12 volt lights). I say again ... you gotta USE
these beast to keep all the 'gremlins' out of 'em. How does the 12
volt dc circuit feed back into the 110 volt ac gauges????
