Racor Filter
Does anyone know if there is a specific part number for the Racor
fuel filter on my 83FC35? I read that I need a 10 micron filter, but if I just shop up at NAPA will they know what I am talking about? Also, is changing the filter as easy as unscrewing the filter housing and putting in the new filter? Do I need to fill the filter up with diesel before installing it? Please forgive my ignorance but I am new to diesels and the Wanderlodge. Thanks. Phil Olson Appleton, WI 83 FC35SB |

Phil, when I first had my 35, I had to change the Racor. Since I was new to
that, luckily the previous owner had a spare. I took the old one out, being very careful to not spill it, as I was at a private campground. Didn't work, got diesel all over me, coach and ground. Nobody saw it. So I changed the gasket and new o-ring- installed the new filter and filled it to the rim with diesel. Since the cover goes into the filter- more fuel on the coach, ground, and me. Racor Filter
Hi Phil,
lots of techniques on this one. Here's mine: First, I use the Racor brand 10 micron filter. It's blue colored, available at West Marine for about $11. It includes the two O- rings, one for the lid, and one for the T-handle. I use the Racor brand because I know it has a baffled, resin impregnated section designed to shed water toward the bottom of the bowl, not just the filtration section, I also enjoy the 'pull tab' feature it has for easy removal. If you're in a pinch, any brand will do, I'm just not sure about how they're manufactured. Second, I glove up with rubber gloves, open the doghouse and loosen the engine filter. Third, I remove the old Racor filter and place it into a large zip lock bag with a few paper towels, then install the new one and O- rings. Fourth, I remove the engine filter and take it to the Racor and pour in the fuel from it to top off the Racor, then put the lid on. Engine filter goes into zip lock bag with paper towels stuffed into the filter. Fifth, new CAT filter goes on the engine. I've heard that the Cat is a 2 micron polishing filter while the aftermarkets are all 5 micron. Step six; open the petcock on the engine, and pump the system about a dozen times. Fuel will come out under the engine, and you'll hear and feel that the air is out of the system. Last step, close the petcock and clean up. It's my understanding that the fuel injection pump can overcome some air, but why risk it? The manual pump is there to use. You can install a switch that will trick the oil pressure sender behind the road side headlights into running the fuel pump and save yourself the pumping. I normally do this change in a truck stop or by the side of the road in the gravel. It can get messy. The numbers I have for my 83FC35 are: Outside Racor Fuel Carquest 1 86209 Fuel Filter " 1 86352 I have not changed them myself, so can't answer your other question. I might be interested pretty quickly here if I can't fix mine on the
cheap - as in "just needs a rubber washer" level of cheap. Do you have any pics of it and stats for it that you could forward my way just in case? Also, not to highjack your thread, but after shopping for a few minutes before I even saw this, I'd also like to ask the group what are the realistic requirements that I need to look for concerning filter size and flow requirements. If anything, this should help to sell this one as I'm sure it exceeds what is required. go to the parker site for spcecs this filter will support a 500 horse

Racor Filter
Hi All I have a dumb question about the racor filter. A year and a half
ago I had a shop take my filter apart & clean it. The other day I was going to clean it myself & I started draining the fuel out of the bottom of the filter. I got about 4 gallons out of it & it was still draining. I was wandering if it was siphoning out of the fuel tank??? Is that a possibility?
