Deja Vu...that posting is about the same as my short trial run after all
the work. You have a good memory.

After Captn' KevinMc, my bus is next. That works for me. Haven't heard
anymore from Kevin.

Did Derek get the hyd fan problem resolved? Did dad & mom get to go on
their trip? Hope all worked out.

Did you hear any more from Rob Robinson, dates he plans to be at your
place, etc?

Update - Thermostat and radiator service, with 6,000 pound in tow.
Evening Curt,

My guess is the correlation for much of the cooling system repairs on
these Detroits would be best expressed in terms of years rather than
miles. Most automotive heating/cooling hoses have a "safe" life around
maybe 5-7 years in my opinion. These are all original hoses etc that I
am replacing so feel am pushing my luck in running them any longer on
the coach. The rad core was shot, maybe it would have lasted another
5,000 miles but I seriously doubt it.

I pulled the turbo & blower off for better access to all the other
parts. Figured I might as well rebuild them & replace all the bearings
while at it. Also had a gasket failure at the blower mounting flange.

I do have a history for all the work on the coach & it was pretty
complete when I purchased it.

The coach is parked at my Land Rover shop in Billings. Plugged into
240-50 amp service & water & sewer hookups. I have done some of the
work on it myself but also have employees that work on it when time permits.

It's also getting stripped and is about ready for repaint when it warms
up some.

Plan to be able to use it quite a lot when it's all finished.

Mexico is calling...The report is that they have some beer & tequila
left down there.

Thanks for the tips Jimmy. I will try & remember to check everything
periodically. Figure the hoses that are silicone will last a few years
but the normal coolant stuff will get replaced every couple of years.

My shop guys just really hate to see me bring something else through the
door. Between all my toys, cars, trucks & the boat, they have a pretty
wide variety of iron to keep running.

Update - Thermostat and radiator service, with 6,000 pound in tow.
I would call it preventative maintenance George. The engine runs real
strong. Ernie has driven it & says it is in top shape. After buying
the coach, I wanted to have a comfort level for the condition of all
systems and major components so I have a base line to work from.

No major problems with anything, just started out replacing things such
as the original battery charger/boilers & kept going from there. We're
remodeling the interior & repainting the exterior too. It's kind of in
my blood I guess to bring old things back to life.

Please take before/after pictures of your coach. We'd all like to see them.

I doubt there is any correlation between maintenance on an engine

used in RV service on one coach relative to any other coach and/or on

an RV engine versus one used in over the road class 8 truck service.

After talking to diesel mechanics, coach owners and truck owners

there appears to be a vast difference in the way the engines are

regularly driven and serviced which I believe is the main reason so

many of our engines are overhauled or replaced at such low mileages.

From what I have seen it is not unusual for our coaches to sit for

months at a time between uses which is not good.



If you look over the various internet sites where RVs are sold it is

not unusual to see engines replaced long before the average service

life of the engines detailed in the manufacturers manuals.



The same appears to be consistent with transmissions, radiators etc.

Two things you can do to minimize the problems with your coach, first

use it as much as possible, and/or start it up and drive it a few

miles at least once a month EXCEPT if it is stored for the winter.

Secondly do the regularly scheduled maintenance, including filters,

air dryers etc and dont over stress the engine by lugging it.

Update - Thermostat and radiator service, with 6,000 pound in tow.
Curt, I dont think dad wanted us working on the bus. Someone pointed
out that we started drinking when we showed up and we both took off
when the fridg was empty. BB said the fan motor could be removed
without pulling the rad??? I think they are still in YorbaLinda.

Rob and Sue will be here around April 6. We should have a mini rally.

Hi Curt,

I will put the before/after pictures together for the forum. I vote for
a Mexico group party too! As you say, planning may take a while but if
we start now, sure that it can work out so many can attend.
