Drivers seat easing out of position.

The Flexsteel seat on my 78 FC slowly slides out of position after I set. Not a
bad position
for an astronaut, but a little disconcerting on the highway. Any ideas?

It sounds like the air side-slide is not locking.

It is essentially a regular manual seat-slide, sitting sideways on the
swivel base, with an air-cylinder pulling the unlock lever (behind and
beneath the seat).

The air cylinder might be bound up, work the lever by hand to see.
There is a spring return on the lever also, make sure it is in place.
If simply a bound cylinder, clean the ram (shaft) with WD-40 or
equivalent and work it until free, wipe clean.

The swivel base is a large winged-rod under the left side of the seat
just above the floor.

John,

From your comment I think the recliner mechanism is slipping. You
didn't mention if you have an air-ride seat. It's been a couple of
years now since my wife disassembled the seats and reupholstered them.
I can't seem to remember the mechanism - seems that there is a notched
plate with the selector held in place by a spring which is released by
the adjustment lever. The spring may be weak and/or the detents may be
worn with the result that the seat back fails to fully lock into
position.

Your seats are probably attached to the seat base with four small
bolts whose nuts are sandwiched between the plates above/below the
seat pivot point. You'll need a combination wrench and a flat ratchet
to remove them. The adjustment lever is held on by a phillips head
screw. Once you have the seat removed, invert it, then lift up and
peel back the seat cover to inspect the recliner mechanism. I'm not
sure how easy your access will be - the wife cut the seat covers off
and removed the foam - down to the bare frame. Not something I'd
recommend just to check out the recliner. She's fearless! Helps to
have worked for an automotive seat supplier.

The air side slide works fine. The problem is after I
set it with the electric controls: the seat and back
of the seat slide back ever so slowly.

Hmmm.

Then it sounds like your switch may be intermittently shorting? Take
it apart and clean it?

With the engine off so it's quiet, try tapping on the switch and/or
bumping the seat around to simulate bumping down the road and see
what happens...
