Ryan, best wishes on your new coach. Ralph Fullenwider can give you an
inspection. He can do it there or at his place in Ok, or on your way to your
home.

I'm a new Bird owner
Well, folks, I've taken the plunge. I'm the proud new owner of an '86
PT-40, 8V92 with 131k miles. Or, rather, I will be once I get down to
it, inspect to make sure it's as advertised, and hand over the money.
But we've come to an agreement and I'm making arrangements to head
down.

The Bird is just north of Dallas:
http://www.mrolivers.com/website_slot_03_1desc.htm

I have lots and lots of questions. I've never driven a rig larger than
a 28' Class A. This monster will be a huge learning experience. I've
also never operated a diesel let alone owned one. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Also, any tips or advice of any sort on inspecting this Bird would be
most appreciated. I am mechanically inclined but I don't know these
rigs and I'm going to be a little blind here. Is there a new owner's
checklist somewhere I can follow?

I'll be driving it back to southeastern Washington State, so if there
are any Bird owners along the way who would like to chat, let me know!

I'm proud to be a member of this family and look forward to meeting
all of you at some point in time.

Great news Ryan! Looks like a nice one for you. Just take things slow
& easy & you'll have no problems driving this Bird. Check the forum
files for the Blue Bird purchase inspection check list. Lots of good
info there.

Best thing to do is make sure you have a couple (at least) of spare fuel
filters plus spares for the Racor as you don't know what kind of stuff
is in the tank.

If you need any assistance on your trip back home, just print off the
list of people in the forum files that can offer assistance. I'm in
Bozeman (or Billings) MT so if you come back this way, stop by for a
visit.

Congratulations again on your purchase.

Ryan, unless you like to drive in Denver, Co traffic, may I suggest an
alternate route that I always take when coming from Texas to Montana. When you
are
on I-70 in Colo, take exit # 304 at Bennett and take hwy 79 north to
Prospect Valley. Turn west and take hwy 52 west to I-25. This is a 2 lane
road, but
it bypasses the traffic in Denver and dumps you right on I-25 north of
Denver. The Valero fuel station in Cheyenne- before you get to I-80 is the
easiest
to get in and out of then the Flying J across the freeway. Hope this helps,
as I have traveled this route many times.
If you want to stop for the nite- KOA in Limon, Co, is good. You can chase
the jackrabbits.!

Congratulations, Ryan. I bought my 'Bird from Mr. Olivers (Paul
Davis) nearly a year ago. It was exactly as advertised. I was pleased
with the service -- Paul Davis gave me a through introduction to the
coach -- including a "training" drive and I spent the night on his
lot before heading for home the next morning. (He also took me to a
nice dinner...) This was my first-ever RV purchase. I had last driven
heavy equipment when I was in the Army -- 40 years ago.

Take a look at the Vintage Birds web site -- there are several check
lists that may be adapted to your coach.

Good luck with your coach!

Good luck Ryan Looks like a good one.

Print the member contacts from both forums, there are also checks
lists in the files, a good one on http://www.vintagebirds.com
check those tire date codes, belts and spare filters, then drive on

Thanks for all the replies, folks. Keep 'em coming!!

Likewise! I'd love to meet as many of you as possible and make some
new friends. We plan to spend a full week going home, just take our
time, learn about the coach and relax, so should be plenty of time for
socializing along the way. I have to be home by the afternoon of May
4th - have a camping trip with my father on the 5th. I can't wait -
he's going to be surprised when I pick him up in this! We were just
planning to take a car together.

My tentative route is just the quick Google Maps directions - here:
http://tinyurl.com/26lvyf
Feel free to look 'em over and if anyone is going to be nearby, let me
know! We'll be starting our journey sometime between the 26th and the
30th. (Since this is the wild Internet and none of us know who is
watching this, I should mention I'm a firm believer in the second
amendment. 'nuff said.) I'm sure we will divert from the main route
here and there to see any sights along the way, but I don't want to
get too indulgent and try to do too much. I just want to learn how
things work, get home in one piece, then take a longer vacation a bit
later when I'm more comfortable with the entire coach.

Ryan

A week ago I bought an '85 PT 36. It Was in Montgmery Al. I live in Southern Ca.
I was pretty nervous the first day and a half
but after that I started relaxing. That was the key. From then on it was a
comfortable, easy, enjoyable drive.

Looks like you're getting a beautiful coach. I think its the same color mine is.

Ryan:

I was just reading the newgroup and noticed you are from Pasco.
There is a group of Wanderlodge owner on the west side that get
together from time to time. In fact, there will be a dozen or so
getting together this weekend in La Conner. The next event is to be
June 1, 2, 3 in Tokeland. If you are interested you are more than
welcome to come join us. It will give you a chance to see some other
Birds and get some questions answered. If you have any questions
about the get-to-gethers I will try to get an answer.
