Memorial Day

Monday is the day we remember all that have given the ultimate
sacrifice for the defense of this country. Even more important for me,
I was named after my uncle, who fought and never came home. His four
other brothers fought and came home.

That is well said. I also honor my husband Jack, for his military
service, he is a Vietnam vet. We will never forget.

Ernie,
I too was named after an Uncle but one who died a tragic death in 1936. He was
my dads only sibling. I was told he was a very good athlete and the summer
between his junior and senior year he with some other ball players were working
at the Georgia Packing Co. [later Sunnyland Packing Co] in Thomasville, Ga. to
earn a little summer money. He was hooked in the leg with a meat hook which
became infected and developed spinal mennengitus. and died. No antibiotics like
today.

It would be interesting to see how many of the forum are Veterans , years
served, rank, war zones served in.
Ernie, By the way I spent two years at Ft. Hood, Texas with 2nd Armored Division
and a couple months at Ft. Carson, Colorado before shipping out in 65 for
Vietnam.

Howard I spent 8 years in the Air Force first stationed at Biloxi,
Mississipt for advanced communications training, in France for 4
years on an assignment with the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Quick
reaction Communications, 3 months in Iran in 1964 providing
communications for the Joint Chiefs during the Indo/Pakistani war,
Denver Colorado for a year for certification as a metrology
technician then another year at Malmstrom AFB , Montana ( in our
missle silos )for advanced training, then to a classified site in the
far east in 1968 where I got sick, med evactd to an Army Medical
Hospital in Hawaii where I was operated on and from which I was
discharged with a VA disability in 1968 and went back to college. And
no I did not take part in the Vietnam War protests which is a real
sore spot with me. Lost a very close high school friend who flew F4Us
in Vietnam. Shot down known to be alive but never returned. My
younger brother spent two tours in Vietnam with the Marines and now
refuses to even talk about it. Commander of my Legion Post was a
tunnel rat in Vietnam and now has severe medical problems from Agent
orange which the VA refuses to look at. Most of the vets I know
refuse to even talk about their experiences in Vietnam if they were
in combat. Its to painful. Hope all of the vets on this forum and
throughout the world are happy in their present lives and have a
wonderful future.

My Dad went into the SeaBees at the age of 42 during WWII and served in the
Pacific. He obviously didn't have to enlist at his age but felt it was his duty
and that he had skills that were needed. He was a Chief Carpenter's Mate.
Financially it was probably a very bad mistake as he never really recovered.
But I am proud that he did.

Folks,

I just want to jump in and tell you all how proud it makes me feel,
and how honored I am for your service. Many of you were serving this
great country before I was born. I am extremely grateful for your
service and the sacrifices of each of you, as well as the sacrifices
of those who did not make it home.

I did not serve in the military. I wanted to be a pilot and they
didn't take pilots with glasses. When I found out a few years back I
could fly transports for the National Guard, I applied but was
rejected due to my age.

Again, enormous thanks to all of you and happy Memorial Day. Keep
posting your service records; I enjoy learning more about you and
reading your experiences.
