Generator Linkage

My generator stopped some time ago. The problem ended up being a bad
group to the solenoid which controls the fuel pump. Have corrected the
problem, but the clip which attaches the linkage to the pump and
solenoid broke when I was reinstalling it. Found a replacement, but it
is shorter in length. How to I adjust it for best functioning of the
generator? The clip is threaded where it attaches to the linkage and
can be lengthen or shortened.
