Dish Network versus Direct TV

Can anyone tell me if Dish Network is compatible with a Datron dish?

I bought Direct TV service for the house and the Bird. It has been the
most frustrating experience in recent memory. The home service has not
worked consistently for more than a few days at a time. And in that
time I have had to return two different receivers. Now it's out
again. The one in the bedroom works but the living room doesn't? I
waited four hours on the morning of the 4th for a tech who never showed
up. Said he couldn't find the address? Anyway, I want to say good
riddance to Direct TV and give Dish Net a try.

Sorry for the rant but thought I should pass on the info to anyone who
may be considering Direct TV.

Keith,

I don't know about Datron and Dish Network compatibility. I can say that
I switched to Direct TV because Dish called and asked where the
receivers were used. When I said one was used in the 'Bird (motorhome)
they said a separate contract was needed, and the cost would be the same
as the house monthly rate.

Direct TV will turn your receiver off/on just by making a phone call.
You pay for the time the receiver is activated. Not a big savings.

Call Datron and ask them which receivers work with your unit. That is
what I did for our 'Bird dish. Found out for best performance I needed a
receiver that was one generation prior to the then current receiver.
Bought it at Best Buy for $50.00. I can now download the dish software
updates, etc.

Thanks Curt, that's good to know. Direct TV would be fine if I could
get it to work. I'm only talking about the house which has been out
more that it has been on. I haven't had an opportunity to use it in
the Bird yet but if it's anything like the service I've gotten so far
I don't want it.

I can't answer about Datron dishes, but both Dish and Direct are roughly equal
in performance. Where the problem lies in most cases, and definitely with yours,
is with local install issues. If you get lucky the Dish installer will be
slightly more competent than the DirecTV installer (with the extremely low
per-install pay rates neither has a high percentage of good installers).

I eliminate that problem by always doing every bit of the install, home or
coach, myself.

I agree and appreciate your advice. I can take care of the Bird
install but the house is another story. The bone head who installed
the house dish pointed it right at the top of a tree. Naturally the
tree is going to grow and fill in during the summer. I'm convinced
the tree is the problem with one exception. The bedroom is working
and the living room is not? Either way I have spent way too much
time and patience trying to get them to respond to the problem.

If the dish face is pointed at the top of the tree, and you are even a modest
distance away, you should be fine.

The dish is roughly a 20-degree offset-feed type (variants from about 19.5 to
23.5 are common), so the angle to the satellite rises 20 degrees above the
direction the face is pointing. Reception in the bedroom just about eliminates
the dish from the current problem situation.

I clearly understand the problem. It took me 2 months to get my bus in- motion
sat system working properly. The idiots they sent out didn't know their #$% from
a hot rock. I finally hooked it up.
Last month I wanted to change to Direct TV in the coach primarily to receive
Distant networks. After giving DirectTV all the information regarding my
in-motion antenna,the installer showed up between 8am and 4pm actually 3pm,at my
home with a stationary antenna for my coach. The coach is 30 miles away and the
antenna is a mute point. I sent him packing and fielded second chance telephone
calls for the next two weeks from DirectTV sales hawkers. Some folks have
problems, I hear some do not, but I ain't one of them.

Hmmm? Interesting? So the problem is in the receiver, again. So
they will send me yet ANOTHER receiver which means I get to go to
FedEx again to send the other one back. This will be the fourth
one. In the meantime I'm paying for service I'm not getting? I
guess this is what happens when they have a monopoly on the
business. Oh well, I suppose this is the cost of doing business
these days.

I had a similar experience. Called them up and said I wanted service
for my RV first and the house second. The guy shows up with with
one, not three, receivers. After I drive the bus to the house for the
install he tells me, we don't do RV intallations. Okay fine. Just
do the house and leave the receiver for the coach. So he does the
house install and it hasn't worked right yet. I guess I should be
glad he didn't touch the Bird!

I'm sure there are plenty of people who've had a good experience with
them but like you said, I ain't one of the either!
