Retarder for PT36
I will give you a layman's explanation (as I've been told) of how the
retarder works....

It is a integral to the transmission, where when activated, forces
transmission fluid into a compressor-fan type of device, putting trans fluid
backwards
through the trans, creating drag, thus slowing the vehicle. The downside is
since the trans fluid in the retarder is creating drag (friction), the trans
fluid absorbs the heat very rapidly thusly you have to keep a close eye on
the trans retarder temp, and the trans fluid temp. If it is overheated, it
looses it's lubricity, and ability to dissipate heat, with the potential of
damaging the trans. The trans fluid cools down quickly once it heats up, and
the faster you can get the fluid through the coolers/trans, the better (lower
gear, spinning up the RPM's). I use the retarder all the time, even when
driving around town, but I always keep one eye on the retarder temp, and one on
the road ahead. Secret is NOT to go too fast....use the retarder on down
hills to slow you down, and use the service brakes and the retarder alternately
to keep your speed well below what you would deem safe in a car.

The dashboard Retarder rocker on/off switch either turns the system on or
off, and the lever you move up and down modulates the amount of braking (full
down max, all the way up minimal)

I know....it's a layman's explanation...if you want something more
technical, refer to your Allison book, or your BB Blue Book if you have 'em.

Can anyone give a discription of the retarder on my coach. I know that
it is a function of the transmission, has an operating lever on the
left side of the dash, and an on/off switch on the left side.

I don't think mine is working. Could it be electrical?

A sure way to test is to turn retarder switch on, excelerate to 30 -40 mph and
depress retarder handle only to slow the coach.

Simply put the retarder reverses the oil flow striking the stator and tries to
stop it from turning, this is all done in the torque converter not the
transmission. normal driving when you apply the brake th e retarder works also,
if you pull the handle the switch must be on to work, WHAT THE TRANSMISSION TEMP
IT WILL GET AWQAY FROM YOU.i

I hope they put an actuator light on those metallic retarders. I nearly set my
