Smoking
I have a 90 sp36 and the exhaust blows what seems to me to be too
much black smoke (smokes on the level and increases under load).
Do I have to take it to a Cat expert or is there something I can do
myself without endangering the engine?

Mike is so right, you have a zf transmission and if this is not
shifting right, low rpms(1300) lots of smoke. Try traveling in ecom,
come to a grade switch to power, this may make the trans. down shift.
I had the comp. chips repromgramed and had to replace the load level
senser on my trans. I did one more thing, Advanced the timming 2
degrees on the engine, after 3000 miles, i have less smoke, more
power, and better mileage. on the interstate out west i could top any
grade at 38 mph, fuel mileage increast .75, I never run my engine
below 1700 rpms.
