frig freezing most stuff

Hi group
getting tired of tossing and wasting food. The frig is freezing most
everything. Have it turned almost to off and it hasn't made any
difference.
It is the original dometic, where is the thermostat? is it something I
can replace?

Also wondering if the rubber around the door is too old and letting
warm air inside? It has no tears but with the age wondering if that
could contribute to the problem? Is that something I could replace?

Rose Mary,

I hope this helps...The problem you are experiencing could be the same as
our experience a few months ago. Our frig. thermostat was set to "less"
cooling and the too cold/freezing continued. The end result was a bad
electronic board. The thermoelectric Solenoid Valve control on the board
allowed the gas valve to remain open along with the electric function,
giving dual cooling. So turning down the thermostat was overridden by the
gas being on when is should have been off. Installed a new board and all is
well.

To get around the dual cooling (gas with elec.), when plugged into shore
power, I turned the gas off at the back side of the frig. until I had time
to get back to the issue. With the gas turned off, the elec. continued to
function as it should, and the freezing stopped.

If all goes as planned, I'm hoping to arrive at Q before noon Friday, Jan.
18. Hopefully the SWBB scouts will have good luck picking a large area for
50+ RVs to circle and we can start circling the wagons.

Rose Mary, check your gasket by placing a dollar bill and closing the door.
if the bill moves around freely, your gasket may be bad. Ralph would have to
comment on your thermostat issue.

Hi Rose Mary:

There are 2 or 3 major items that will cause this problem.
1. LP Thermostat (in back of refrig) weak, bad connection or failed
2. Thermistor Located on the fins inside the refrig with a clip. (and this
is a high hitter)
A. Be sure the thermistor is still on the fins and not hanging free. It
should be located on the 5th fin from your right.
3. Circuit board ( though not as high a hitter as one might think) but more
likely to be a bad or corroded connection.

All of these parts can be tested to verify which is defective and be replaced.

Thanks Ralph, Greg & Ernie and group

Still unable to find anything on, hanging or attached to the fins....

there is only 1 shutoff outside (back of frig) and when I turn that
off we have no propane to stove or furnace....

have had to mess with the off/gas/elect knob lately
to get it to go to gas when we are not on electric.

Have had the freezing problem on and off for quite awhile,
more on electric than lp I think. tho it has now gone extreme.

Defrosting today tho I can see the fins clearly (more like icicles
hanging from the bottom of the fins)

There seems to be good resistance when I put paper in the door and try
to pull it out.

After turning off the frig, both dials, defrosting (door cracked open)
went to the grocery store etc for a couple hours. Left both dials on off.
When we returned back to the bird to put groceries in etc. ice was
already forming on the fins (dials still on off) so the dials aren't
working, don't know if the propane is on as well....rats.

So is it what you're calling the 'board' or what?

Rose Mary,

Not sure which fridge you have, but most Dometics have a circuit board
behind the controls. If you pop the control panel off you should see
it. That said, there's not much you'll probably be able to do with it
once you get it out, so at this point I'd recommend you stop by any RV
dealership and have them look at it. I'll bet it takes them just a few
minutes to isolate the problem. My money is on that control board and
with any luck they'll have one in stock and you can be fixed up for a
couple hundred bucks.
