ZF Tranny Problem

ZF Tranny Problem
I am wondering if there are any ZF experts on the Forum. Twice in the
last 12 months I have had A small problem. First time I was stoppped
in a construction zone waiting for a backhoe. I started to accelerate
and then had to back pedal as there was a huge hole. I dont remember if
I was in 1 or 2 but when I reapplied the throttle it seemed to be
either slipping or was in neutral. I put it in neutral and then in D
and away we went. Everything was fine. Yesterday I stopped at a toll
booth in Mexico. I hit the throttle and then had to back of as there
was a pedestrian very close. Again when I reapplied th throttle it
either was slipping or was in neutral. Again I put it in neutral and
then D and it took off. I am wondering if this is some quirk of these
trannies or maybe a hydraulic pressure problem: A valve that sticks??
Any suggestions?? I will be calling ZF tomorrow.

Wonder if it has something to do with rpm and idle bypass??? sounds
like you just engage the TorqueConverter then back off rpm to an idle
and can not re-engage it??????? I would be careful to not high rpm
it too much when it is not moving and sounds like it is slipping. you
would not want it to find lockup with no motion and high rpm!!! I
would two foot the fuel/brake untill it was fixed. Or just run the
guy over next time.

Best thing to do is consult ZF. It could be as simple as low voltage to the ECM or the transmission shift selector starting to get tired. (Dirt, Dust, Corrosion, etc)
Be sure to check your tranny oil level. It must be at the right level. Check as following:
Cold - Vehicle level, shift selector in Neutral, Engine idle 600rpm, after 2-3 minutes check oil level at the cold zone.
HOT same as above except no 2-3 minute wait and Oil level should be at hot zone.
ZF doesn't have quirks like me with this computer, ZF is telling you something thats in the making. Could take years to finally happen.

Hi Bruce
I know I am a long way from an expert on them & I have never had
that problem. I did have ZF install a new E-Prom because I thought it
didn't shift up & down as should. It was an upgrade. The E-P was
$154.00 parts & it did make a difference it the up & down shift. I do
know you have to get a full 12 volts to the E-Prom .Blue Bird put
20-30 amp Bosch relay . That was before I had the new E-Prom.

make sure the return spring on the throttle position switch is not broken. It is accessed by removing the metal cover on the back of the battery box.

Thx. for the replies. Mike that spring is aok as I had that cover off
last month. I did check the last time I had the problem and there was
lots of voltage.

Your symptom does not seem to match the problems I have encountered
before. I would second the idea of contacting ZF directly. Let us
know what you find out.

ZF Tranny Problem
Well I spoke with ZF this a.m. The tech said it was not likely an
internal problem. He suggested that I watch the light on the shifter
and make sure that when this happens the light is on. . He also
suggested I crawl under and check all the electrical connections on the
tranny. Other than that it might be a case of waiting until it happens
more frequently. Thanks for all the advice. I will keep you posted.
