Bus won't start
I have have a 1987 FC that I went to get out of storage.I turned the
key and nothing happened. I checked the normal things a/t switch,
transmission in neutral, batteries charged, and good voltage at
starter.
What I found was that when I turned the ignition switch none of
the dash guages moved, so I pulled the ignition switch. One pin on
the plug connection was burnt. I checked ignition switch and
connecting wires. I have no power coming to the ignition. I checked
at the front lower load center. I had no voltage at the ignition
connection. My questions are.
Where does the ignition get its power from?
Are there any fuses or relays in this circut?
Does anybody have info on a new ignition switch? I looked in the
parts database. It listed a part for a 1982 fc. It was Napa
pt.#ks6599. the switch was for a 1969-75 jeep. I was wondering if
there were any heavy duty switches avaiable.
Thanks

Hi Ron ,

THis Ignition switch is a Pollak # 31-139
It is a reliable switch, I would guggest checking those
big Amphenal (spell) Connectors, under the dash, the ignition
switch wireing goes thru the connector, near the right side of the
dash.
Look for burnt pins, in the center of the connector.
Clean and lube with electronic contact cleaner, or hard wire around
these few pins connected to the ignition switch.

Good to hear from you,

It would be a good plan to replace all the push on connections with screw type, ignition switch and any thing else you may encounter while solving the problem you are faced with. Any power runs that may have butt connectors in line should be replaced with new wire. Butt connectors are a problem in all 'birds and should be replaced when rewiring system supply circuits. In other words, no butt connectors from the source to the ignition switch or any other important component. The ignition switch should only 'signal' relays. The relays will carry the power current and greatly extend the life of the key switch. The same is true of all on-off switches, headlights, heater AC wipers, etc.

Speaking from experience, Check and then add an additional ground wire from batteries to frame.
Letting these jewels set is about the worst thing you can do. At least with a fire you can turn it into the insurance and then forget it.
(Been there, done that)
My Sequence of events since pickup
1: Bad Ground
2: Bad Batteries
3: Failed ignition switch
4: Approx 300 Gals bad fuel (yes there is a shelf life on Diesel and additives will not bring it back)
Pumping that bad fuel through the system does things to filters, pumps, and lines that give Bankers nightmares. Especially when the value of these shiny toys is going in the garbage.
Have fun with it and if the challenge is too much, divest.
I'm open to offers.
Am considering renting as a 2 bedroom apartment for itinerants, but rather trade for a trailer or toyhauler or something. I have the BB equivalent of a boat to go with it

Thanks for the advice on my ignition problem. I had 2 burnt wires on my
plugin connection for the ignition. I took out the plugin connection
and spliced strait thru. I also had a bad aftermarket iginition switch.
I have a new pollak # 31-139 on order. The bus is now at home and
getting prepped for its first outing for the year.
