Hi!
I am a missionary in Brazil, we plan on a furlough in 09, and we want
to be all together because we will be leaving our two oldest a
college. there is 7 of us, and i have noticed that most on the birds
sleep 6. i REALLY like the birds, and there are some good deals on a
few on line. should i or shouldn't i buy a bird?

You are right about some good value on Birds right now if you can
afford the maintenance and recurring expenses. Only you can decide
if
you should buy into the bird family. You have provided little
information aobut your plans so I'm limited in any advice I might be
able to provide. I am assuming you are planning on using the Bird
in the US. One issue might be your planned length of
ownership. I would not purchase a Bird unless I were planning on
several years of ownership (unless you are a dealer). You mention
that you desire to use the Bird while on furlough. Do you plan on
selling at the end of the furlough? Selling a Bird is not usually a
quick endeavor unless you price it well below market.

If you are purchasing a vintage bird, then you will need to plan on
a
repair budget and factor that by the amount of labor you will
provide. If you are purchasing a more recent bird, the repair costs
might be reduced (might), but the recurring maintenance will still
be
required.

I am by no means trying to advise against you purchasing a Bird.
Just
do so with realistic expectations and you will have a more enjoyable
Bird experience.

You can't go wrong with a Bird if it fits your circumstances.

We kept our first bird just over 10 months in 1999. It was an '84 FC w/ twin sofas up front and the corner queen in the back. The dinette also made out into a bed but for kids only. The exterior was a little weatherworn, including the decals and paint, but the inside was in excellent condition. Outside of routine maintenance and a broken wire on the radiator fan, we had no unusual expenses. It was a low-cost, low-maintenance experience (compared to later coaches).

I imagine you will be touring churches on deputation raising funds for your next term. You need dependable transportation so you can meet your schedule. I would suggest you ignore the outside except for clues about how a coach was cared for and make sure the engine, generator, refrigerator, electric and suspension are in nothing less than excellent condition and make sure the coach has no air or water leaks. Carpet, upholstery, laminate and paint sell coaches but won't get you where need to go. Best of luck.

There are better deals on the large slide fiberglass rigs that are more
suitable for a large family. I think the Birds will hold value better
because more birds I believe are not sitting with loans. There is less
incentive to dump a asset that has not a monthly cost. The fiberglass
rigs are sold with big notes that outlive the usable construction or
the planned consumer appeal of the product. It may be best to find
something that is set up for what you need. My 40 foot '94 will sleep
only 2 and maybe two small kids on the fold out sofa. A seller may try
and convince you otherwise.

A purchase in '09 has uncalculatable use and turnover costs. Banking
the bucks till the week you need the camper may prove the best deal if
the only changes you plan to make are in the underwear drawer. If you
are looking to buy a fixer upper and a bird that needs major floorplan
mods, plan to stay around till BYU commencement.

Buying or spending is very personal. for me I usuly pay cash but mostly
because every time I apply for a loan I get zero interest. Lenders have
no interest in giving me the bucks.
