Coach FULL of amonia !!
Turned the refrigerator on last night, went in the house to go to bed.
Upon checking the coach this morning found it FULL of amonia. I know
this is a bad cooling unit. Never had any warning anything was going
wrong it's always worked great. Anyone have a good source for a
replacement reefer? anyone changed out the cooling unit only? any help
is appreciated. It's a Dometic Royal Designer 7030 side by side.
Thanks Bob 93pt Illinois....

We had the Dometic quit working in our coach, and the Shop said the
rebuilt cooling systems didn't last too long. They had a 2 year old
takeout unit from a SOB that we bought & they installed for about half
the price of a new unit.
Since you are going to get another unit, Check out the "Norcold".
They are recommended by many here on the board.
BTW/ Ours crapped out on the fifth day of a month long trip. We
bought a 2.2CuFt 110V unit at Home Depot. A tie-down strap secured it
to the Dinette table, and allowed us to finish the trip.

I have a 7030 in a Londaire fifth wheel, doing sedentary duty at the camp
ground. Best deal I found was WAYYY up north in the hinterlands of Wisconsin.
The guy I found is a letter carrier and fixes RV reefers as a side business. He
quoted me 600 bucks but it must have been something less to repair as he only
took 100 when I picked it up. Mine never leaked out the ammonia but it did heat
up the coils and it didn't cool, dunno what he did. Works good so far.
I tried this angle as I didn't want to pay the 2700 bucks a new one cost,
however, if I had a 93 bird, I'd buy a new one.
Rule of thumb, 10 years service life for a RV cooling unit.

Bob:

The cooling units only option means you get a re-built, not new.
The best warranty comes from replacement, but that can be problematic
also. They quit manufacturing of a lot of old units. Dometic does
not have 3-ways anymore. I suggest you go to the Dometic web site and
check out all the options available, otherwise look at a different
manufacturer.

I replaced a Dometic a year ago and although it works fine, the
trim was below the quality of the original and the interior space is
less for the same dimensioned unit.

Good luck.

Ron: I called Dometic and they don't have a replacement for the 7030.
the closest they have you need to cut out about a 1/2 inch on top the
opening. I checked Norcold and they don't have anything even close to
the opening measurment's it's about 6inch's off at the top. I've got a
rebuilt cooling unit located for 640.00 installed on the reefer. They
said if I take it out and sit it on the floor of the coach they could
do it there. two year no leak warranty. This is probably where I am
going. Thanks' to all...Bob 93pt Illinois

Bob,

One of the best sources seems to be <http://www.rvmobile.com> Their site has
troubleshooting information plus a lot of other info. Though I have
never had to use them, I hear lots of good reports including people
getting replacement cooling units and DIY installations.

Bob:
Replaced my 7030 coil 3 years ago. They would be hard pressed to do
it in the aisle. I have to get mine out the door. Easy to do with 2
people. Remove the passenger seat before taking out of the door.
Place some tape on the door edges as the refer edges are sharp.

I got my coil from DTI RV Parts and Appliances in Middlebury, IN
800-289-0919. They are a distributor to RV service dealers. Ordered
mine trough a friend who services RV's. 3 years ago it was $943
and came with a 5 year no leak warrantee. Took me a day to do the
job.

It is not a hard job once you have the unit out.
