For the cooling you get out of a dash air, (front of body cool, but back sweats)
it is generally not worth the monies to repair. Actually cheaper and a lot more
comfy to run gen set and roof airs.

I repaired my SP36 dash air and am glad I did. The key was the fact that a
friend had some old R12 and gave it to me. The most expensive aspect of the
repair will be the replacement R12. Call me if you want to talk about this
repair. It wasn't that difficult. 412-303-3177

I was able to have my dash air rebuilt to run on 134.  The expansion valve and dryer had to be replaced and some old hoses were replaced as well.  
The original compressor, evaporator and condensor work fine.

Are the evaporator and dryer and some hoses all that was required to rebuild your dash air. And also what was the cost to do that rebuild for 134? Appreciate your answer.

Chuck,

I have an 87 FC35 and I fixed my chassis air a few years ago. I know I don't
have the long hose runs like you, but I still had advice not to get mine
going... However I have been very pleased, and have had virtually no issues
since doing so.

I put a new condensor (Red dot) on mine and converted to R134a. I think the
condensor was around $600, and that was the most expensive single piece. It cost
maybe $1200 total (did the work myself). That included a new compressor.

I live in Texas, and it was not comfortable driving into the sun on a hot day
running roof airs only. Not to mention the front unit puts out around 20-25,000
btu. On cooler days, or when the sun goes down the chassis air is easily enough
to keep things cool without running the genset.

Chuck...my 89SP dash air has always worked(6yrs) for me, however on real hot
days it doesnt cool very well. I probably should have it looked at too.
BY the way could you tell me how your retarder lever works? With your sw. on
can you push lever down and get braking with out using brake?
