UltraGuard Rock shield
After finishing up my project of "toad" connection and "toad" wiring I
have moved on. Latest project, a big ole mud flap on the back of the
bus. I've got it on but I have a question about my instillation. The
mud flap is connected to the bus by a piece of angle iron. Nothing in
the directions discussed attaching this to the bus. I drilled up thru
the lower edge of the bumper and put a couple 1/4 inch bolts thru the
angle iron which certainly did the job. My concern is that this thing
is certainly going to drag from time to time and I am concerned that it
is attached too firmly to the bus. I think it should have more freedom
to swing then the way I have it attached now. So my question is how
have you fellows fastened these things to your coaches? It's about
three inches off the road and I have a couple spots that I know its
going to drag over. I was considering getting something like a hook and
just hooking that thru the holes in the bumper, but then that would
possibly allow it to get off the bus. Idea's appreciated.

The mud flap should be free to swing in either direction. Two or three links of chain will work.

John when I put an Ultra Guard on an SOB several years ago the instructions that came with it said the minimum clearance was 4 inches otherwise you would (on occasion) scrape the groundresulting in rocks depositing themselves on the toads upper surfaces as well as chipping the frontal paint.

Most of the installations I've seen have a short bit of chain between the coach and the mud flap. Usually the flap is mounted forward of the rear bumper with the chain going up to the frame rails or some other brace at the back of the coach.
And, yes, you can be sure it will drag and you need to think about a mounting that will allow the flap to flip should you pull forward then back up while it is dragging. I've witnessed a couple of flaps (on SOBs) get slightly torn up at a campground as someone maneuvered with a mud flap trapped between the bumper and the ground.

Hi Rob, I am going to have to "adjust" that as well. I may not even
use the bumper as my point of attachment. Why I didn't think of the
chains I'll never tell ya. And I can see the point of the thing being
too close to the road and actually causing more problems then it
would prevent. The directions did say 4 inches but I was going to
live with three if I had too. I really appreciate the help received.
I get'er done but it certainly works better when I get a little help
from my friends (especially before I screw up)
