Oh, heck, I forgot to address that. Thanks for the reminder, Bill.

The only issue was in my head. I updated the web page to reflect this.
Here is what I wrote:

"Please note, the slip ring (collector ring) has been changed
slightly. The new assembly has a key notch in the shaft hole, which
I'm told is to route wires through on another model of generator. My
old slip ring did not have this notch, which caused a good deal of
confusion. The new part is perfectly compatible with the old, don't
worry about the key notch, just pretend it isn't there. One additional
point of confusion was the old assembly came off with grooves in the
shaft hole, which corresponded to splines on the shaft. I expected the
new ring would need to "line up" with these splines, much like
installing a transmission. When the new assembly didn't have the
corresponding grooves, I assumed it was a problem. This is not the
case. The grooves are put into the ring by the shaft when you install
it. The shaft splines dig into the softer ring material to hold it in
place. So, don't let the lack of grooves on your new ring worry you."

Greg,

To be honest, I'm not sure. I've been told that a bad ground could
cause this, as could a weak spring. Either would cause minor arcing
that would eventually wear the ring down. Also, I'll bet the age of
the thing was also a factor. It's been in service for 22 years.
Although, the ~1800 hours of operation don't seem like an awful lot to
me.

I double checked the tightness on my grounds and replaced the springs.
My bearing appeared tight so I doubt that was the issue, but I
replaced it anyway because I was in there.

My coach had the exact same problem as Ryans. I was able to complete
the remove and replace, exactly as he had described in his write up. I
was at Tom Warners rally, so I had helping hands and borrowed tools to
fall back on also.
Ryan went above and beyond in helping me on this also. I made the
mistake of not marking the wires carefully enough and not taking
before pictures. There were about 26 wires that needed to come off. In
the process of moving everything some of my wire markings had come
off. I had everything back together except there were three wires I
wasn't sure where they went. Ryan got on the phone with me, pulled up
his photo's and was able to talk me thru their proper hook up! I
really didn't want to do a smoke test after spending all that time
under there.
So all turned out well, and thanks again Ryan!

That's sure nice of you to post on the forum, Tom. Smile You're more than
welcome. Like I said, everyone here has helped me so many times it's
ridiculous. I'm happy to be able to give something back. It's the
least I can do. If I were there, I'd have crawled under the darn thing
