Generator Fan Motor
Hi there,

I am new to Bluebirds (Yesterday) and i have a generator problem and i
am hoping that someone can share some experiences.

The fan that cools the generator radiator is not turning. I did turn
the fan by hand and it keep turning and worked. I stopped the
generator and restarted and it did the same thing again. I did this a
third time and no matter how fast i spin the fan by hand it will not
run by itself.

I find what i believe to be a capacitor in a box right before the motor
and confirmed that i do have 220 going to the motor.

Does anyone know, does that typicaly go bad or the motor itself or both.

Now assuming the motor has gone bad, are there any secrets for removing
the fan assembly from the coach and from the squirrel cage.

There are no real secrets to removing the squirrel cage, it is just tight to get out. When removing the fan from the motor shaft do not damage the motor. Before removing make sure it is the motor. They do not fail often.
I have a motor wiring drawing for my "90 if you want it. I presume they should be the same. E-mail jwasnewski@...

It could simply be your start capacitor, which is mounted on the side
of the fan or in a J-box. You can remove it and take it to a
generator shop to check. Just be carefull that it doesn't unload on
you. Keep fingers away from the connections.

Before you remove it, do you show voltage on your meters? If no voltage, then you have to start looking a different way.

On my coach and the previous coach there was a circuit breaker or reset button and on off switch on the control box which houses the main circuit breaker and voltage regulator.
As I recallthe switch controls the fan motor.

not start. I gave it a small push start and it started turning and ran for
5-10 minutes then came to a stop.

I had a 50/50 chance that I would be that
lucky. I pulled squireel cage assembly out and put it on the workbench. From
the time that I had run the generator to the time I got unit to my work bench
was an 1.5 hours, and the motor case was still very hot, so it makes me think
there is something wrong with the windings in the motor, so I will be out
looking for a new motor.

there was 220 volts getting to the motor.

Has anyone replaced and where did they
find the motor. Mine has a part number of 5KCP39KG3186S and on grainger
there is one that is close, but does not have the same mounting.

Since I am not near my coach, I think that the motor is 240 volts. Why
not check it from house supply?

The invoice shows the following for our '87 PT38: Gen fan motor 1/3HP - A.O. Smith - D1036/X003 $69.12. . Capacitor - 5-370V $3.75. Wheel (fan) - D10-10x1/2 $32.54 Clean, paint, assembly $45.00.

I took the gen housing/motor, fan, etc. assembly to an Electric Motor Sales & Service shop. One that rebuilds home furnace housing/motor/fan units. They are the same as what's in our homes.

Paul,

If you look closely there may be a label that states,
"Oil every 3 months", I think this is pretty funny.

The Grainger parts that I used on an Onan, I believe are the same,
So check out these Grainger numbers. It is a 208 Volt three speed
motor, then hard wire the highest speed.

motor 208V 4M099
Starting Capacitor 2GE76
Squirrel Cage Blower 4C592

I replaced the Wheel and blower because it was old, out of balance
and I damaged it trying to remove the motor.
