Federal smog laws GregO'Connor
California is on the forefront of plans to ease their trucking
economy into Federal mandated smog rules. CA smog rules are seen
by many as an example of typical Ca tree huggers getting their way
but infact it is a kinder transition to Fed smog mandates. Diesel
motorhomes with "private registration" are exempt from many CA smog
requirements but will be hit blind sighted when fed regulations take
hold. CCW is poised to cash in on repowering Bus and Tractors on
both coasts. Wanderlode came with the realestate

Commercial trucks in Ca have required programs with independent fees
and applications. The Highway patrol CHP does a good job of checking
compliance (trust me). I get pulled over for a roadside inspection
more than 5 time per the year. Thursday was one of those inspections
where a new team of clean jumpsuit clad officials reviewed my
Dumptruck and 18,000 lb excavator toad after I passed the CHP
review.

SCAQMD and ARB are the agencies. I was told that I was one of 50%
who had the required independent Smoke test certifications. They
retested for smoke and checked that the engine had compliant
decals???? The indepent smoke cert I provided and a onsite anytime
retest is a requirement.

ChrisF and Macie must be up on inpending laws effecting continued
operation of the old Cat3208 DD S92 and S60. Where do you two think
we are headed?

Greg, This news may not be all bad. When you guys get hit with all these new regs. out there, would you consider adding a 1977FC gasser to your fleet? Greg, can you provide a cite for this? I spent extensive time with Google and
could not come up with any federal requirements that did not involve one of the
following:

New engines
ULSD fuel

Neither of those would adversely affect my coach, so I would like to know if you
have some hard-to-find information concerning federal rules that would, in fact,
affect vintage stuff?

To require legacy vehicles compliance with new smog regualtions is not
only draconian it smacks of dictatorship. I doubt that any older
vehicles will ever repower to meet some dumb requirement. Can you
imagine how many of these pollutant spitting vehicles are still being
used today? Many millions.

Don when you cant find good stuff on google, use google news, google blogs or even google images. google filters out news from its web search and images sometimes have creative tags which will land you closer to info. I like to review products and info in News and Blogs to get the subjective dirt.



Here is a link to News about Longbeach. When I go to any city with my rig ,local police departments have Commercial cops who spend their time reviewing commercial vehiclesdriving in that city. For the most part these city servants are way cool and a stop is under 45 min. Local cops have been the first to ask me to race the engine while they check for visible smoke. I am sure they would stop a smoking bus for the $300. plus.



The smoke testing service I hire is AMERC Inc. they test all my crap right down to diesel jumpjack dirt stompers. My bus would not pass review because itis two stroke. I dont register it with my commercial equipment and I dont dodge tax by using a shill corporation so the bus is personal property and exempt from the smoke program. it is not exempt from smoke laws that it now violate. AMERC business cardadvertises ARB Mandated Testing. Air Resources Board . Here is a Riverside articleon ARB but it is mis leading in that you assume arb programshave yet to start. I was talking with about 16 truckers sitting roadside last Thursday waiting for tow or bond.



I think someone posted that Macie was a lobbyist or CCW is represented by one in Washinton (I am thinking to push mandates forward, 'Moneytree hugger'). I cant say I am against the smog rules and implementationif it has a clean environmental outcome. I would think Macie could offer better insight.

I know, and Greg is certainly correct when he says that California is employing
such standards quicker than Federal, but the question is about something in
Federal (or California, for that matter) rules that will make us comply with
smog rules (which would mean repowering, or junking).

Hello BB family, regarding the emission laws rthere are compliance date for various engine years , And also if the engines cantmeet the compliance you will need to repower are scrap , This all started with the federal government. Makeing california clean up the Air quality and if California cant Comply.The Federal Government will hold funding. That California needs for Road work and etc,This is why Arnold the Governor and AQMD and all the other agencies have such a push on getting the Air cleaned up. I know, and Greg is certainly correct when he says that California is employing such standards quicker than Federal, but the question is about something in Federal (or California, for that matter) rules that will make us comply with smog rules (which would mean repowering, or junking).

Hi BB some Diesel Engines will need a Diesel Particulate Filter installed this is known as a DPF Filter there are 2 types Passive and active Depending on how hot the engine gets ,will determine which one best suits the engine needs`Alsoduty cycleof the engine plays a role also.There are some factorsyou must know for you to pick the right DPF filter And just to let you know CCW supplies and Installs these DPF filters. and tell me my bus cannot be driven and is now worthless unless I
