Quality or not? (was "Need an opinion")
Quality is a relative term... In comparison to the 1979 28' "Four Star" built on a Dodge 440 van chassis we owned before our BB, our 1986 PT-40 is in a completely different class of quality, both in terms of build and appointments, not to mention the obvious physical characteristics of size, capacity and durability. However, Stephen is right - our machine is a constant drain on time and money. I must love it, despite this, because we're not ready to get rid of it (regardless of the fact that it's probably only worth 2/3 what we paid for it). Despite Dan Sunderland (the previous owner)'s good maintenance and good records, and our attempt at the same, things keep going wrong, some of them clearly design flaws.
For example, the dreaded headlight switch failure got us on the road. I finally have done the work of adding in the relays to improve current flow to the headlights, and was astonished to find 14ga wire all the way through to the headlights. I though the mid-80's BB engineers were a bunch of aircraft engineers, who are typically wont to overspec. What were they thinking? Not really worth a rant - after all, we have each other for support (or from my perspective, I have you all!), and it's still a fun hobby that can enable a wonderful lifestyle, for which I am very grateful. Greg of Greg & Barbara (AKA Smoke Blower & Luscious) 1986 PT-40 now in Union City MI, and onward west tomorrow! Each time you judge yourself you break your heart. -Kirpal Venanji From: Stephen Birtles To: WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, June 22, 2009 3:00:04 PM Subject: [WanderlodgeForum] Re: Need an opinion Canadians buy wanderlodges not because of location where they were built I would buy Canadian But they are not built here And really the quality is soso Buy a Wanderlodge and get a hobby fixing it and i would not touch a 2004=2006 because they were spec'ed oh so well light weight front ends too small tires watch the lawsuits and when did you see a wanderlodge built in Canada or for that matter now any where else. creative book keeping, the economy and poof they are gone Stephen |
