Bob, can you air your coach up so the generator will roll out?

To the best of my knowledge the generator is mounted solid on the rear driver's
side. The main engine works perfect and the air system airs up fine. The
generator just will not start. I think that 87 is the first year that they did
not roll out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Skid steer Tractors are notorious for requiring removal of several components
to get to the one you need to give attention to. When I cant get to a starter
on a tractor that needs some attention I take a digital picture of it with a
camera sent in with a long arm and use the image to make test or removal plans.
(CurtS gave this camera tip here on this forum 4 years ago) Diesel motors
require major compression to overcome to make it start. if the batteries are
down or not making good contact it might not have enough guts to even turn and
all you will hear is a click and burning noise as the brushes become screwed up.

With a picture you could find the power line in and test voltage of the cable
loop then test voltage of the top of +bolt/stud it is attached to. if the stud
reads less voltage it is a bad connection at that point. some times you need to
turn the key and test voltage on both to see that they drop the same. many
starters do not use the mounting bolts to make a ground and require a ground
strap

Bob to access the starter you can remove the access panel on the back of the
generator compartment this has to be done of course from underneath the coach --
I drove an 87 FC for yrs, any repair or service to the gen set can be
difficult, there are a number of things very different about the '87 to '90FC's
which I may can be of help with. "96 BMC now Jesse

Hi Bob,

Working on this Onan/Kubota is really difficult.
Most of the coolant hoses, starter,Alternator are on the opposite side.
The Onan is mounted to a steel tray, two bolts each side, Then there are cable
connectors, exhaust, fuel lines and coolant hoses to disconnect to remove the
entire unit. You may try to remove the front two bolts, loosen the rear bolts
and try to tilt the generator forward using a floor jack. I have not tried this
but it may give enough room to access the starter. Keeping in mind that there
are many connections in the read.
Check the easy stuff first, like the battery, cables & grounds.

Before worrying about getting to the starter, I have to say that the hammer and meter tricks need to be applied to insure that you really need to get the starter out. Is it the starter, solenoid or interface relay? Have you barfed a battery connection, or ground from the engine

Does your genset have a reset button on the control box ?
Also, check the fuse in the fuseable link.
