ADDING PROPANE INJECTION TO THE CAT 3208 TURBO SP
Forum members:
Oneof our 89SP owners added propane injection to his CAT and loves it!
Cost about $1200 before labor.......
better fuel mileage and more power.

Anybody into this? I am considering putting propane injection on my 90SP in
the future.

Propane injection wont hurt the engine but it adds more hp to the equation and
may tax the trans. the zf was used because the allison wouldnt hang with 300hp,
could be that the zf is set up for 500 hp and things would be ok?????. the
short drive shaft wont absorb any twist so all the torque added is at the ring
gear and the transmission. I tuned down the hp in a dump truck because I twisted
a drive shaft when spinning tires caught traction. went from 500 hp to 315. The
94pt is the best bluebird ever built, just go with the best and save the money
trying to make your underpower rig run like a pt

You are correct on the UNDERPOWER of the SP....TOO bad BB did not put a 400
Cummins in the SP...OH well.....not sure the MAX HP for the ZF....I doubt if I'd
be spinnng the wheels though!

ADDING PROPANE INJECTION TO THE CAT 3208 TURBO SP
I'm sure many folks would consider the FC35 with a non-turbo 3208 to be
grossly underpowered, but personally I'm pretty happy with mine.  It will
run 72 all day on level interstate.  Ok, so climbing hills is a chore, but I

just try and get a running start coming down the hill before Smile  I haven't
found a hill yet it won't go up if I'm patient enough, and getting 9MPG
makes me really love it Smile

ANOTHER FC owner rubbing it in. When 8V92 PT/WB drivers find a
downhill long enough to coast far enough on, we might get 9mph (momentarily) on
the downhill. Any day I break 5 is a great day with the 8V92! <sigh> ;^)

ADDING PROPANE INJECTION TO THE CAT 3208 TURBO SP
I'm confused by the below statements.....as the Allison transmissions are used in the PTs which put out well over 300hp, closer to 500hp?

ADDING PROPANE INJECTION TO THE CAT 3208 TURBO SP
They are different models of transmissions and are rated at different
horsepowers and torque.

ADDING PROPANE INJECTION TO THE CAT 3208 TURBO SP
Ron is correct.................in 89, BB put the ZF tranny in the SP because it
was rated at a higher horsepower than the allison tranny..I guess they could
have installed ahigher horsepower rated alison tranny but chose the ZF
instead...The ZF company makes BMW & Mercedes trannys..It is a bulltproof
tranny.many garbage trucks use th ZF............I'm just not sure the top HP
rating of our ZF in the SP/.......I was hoping GREG would answer with that
data............he seems to know a lot of stuff.........
I am very interested in adding the PROPANE INJECTION to my SP wihin the next
year or two...I may as well keep my SP and enjoy it as the price bottomed out so
I cant sell it and I aint giving it away..........take care..

From what I've heard.....a diesel only burns 75% of its fuel...HOWEVER with the
propane injection, the diesel burns 100 of its fuel AND gets extra horsepower
from the propane...that is abig deal to me...fuel saving AND more power...NO
MORE crawling up he hills...................$1200 could be recovered in a year
or so of travels plus passing those semi's might be fun!!!!

ADDING PROPANE INJECTION TO THE CAT 3208 TURBO SP
I actually think the sp is powered better than the v8 pt pound per pound. the
tire spinning is a issue on dirt roads and wet grass. Since motorhomes run
fully loaded all the time they never spinnout on good traction sufaces. but
surfaces with ;sand or 1/8in rock on top of asphalt ;wet grass or ;ice they
spinn away . in a fc when the spinning tires hit good traction surface the
long driveline takes the abrupt force and may twist. with the 2 foot driveline
of a pusher, the ring gear in the rearend where the drive force takes a 90 deg
turn takes the hit and proves to be the weakest part. I suppose there is a
hydrolic blowoff valve in the transmission to take the hit but all the lowend
torque demand cant be good.

Dodge had a big problem when they put a cummins in a pickup truck in 84 and
matched it with a gas engine proven transmission. operator driving demands
proved the transmission to not be able to hang with the extra power and torque.
I have a 96 Dodge cummins with 200Kmiles and am working on the 4th trans.
