Well I just got back from a 5 week vacation with the new PT we went
to Yellowstone the up to MT then went down to Ky lake in KY..Most of
the time it was great .but I had a few problems. The best advice is
clean your raditor core at the beginning of the travel year. At
Bufffalo Wyo while climbing at 8500 feet my raditor blew all of the
anti-freeze out and I scored 4 pistons and liners, had it towed and
ended up replacing the raditor along with a complete inframe
overhaul. That was the worst of the trip. I should have taken the
time to steam clean the raditor core prior to leaving but got rushed
and it came back and bite me.other problems TV's I need to know whats
s the best TV to repace both the front and back TVs.to day my
electric 110 volt motor on my generator burnt up,so that will have to
be R&Red ,my center A/C the compressor froze up and that will be
repaced with a new one.other than these problem it was a great trip
and looking forward to going in a couple of weeks again. We put over
4500 miles on the coach ,got 6.5 mpg I drove 70 to 75 on the flat
land I flew up the mountians at 50 to 55 mph,was real happy with
power I had .I have put on 3000 miles since the O/H used no oil It's
still on full .The Detriot Dealer said use only 40 wt. oil summer and
30 wt in the winter, under no reason use muly grade oils. they said
this will wear out your engine early and will cause the engine to use
oil.on a overall rating I'd give the coach a 85% grade,I'm very happy
with the 91 Wanderlodge. My wife just love the coach and said it's the
best we ever had.Dave 1991 WLPT 40 & 82 FC 35

Dave: Was that the pass on Alt 14 over the medicine wheel area? If so
I can see why you might have developed a problem. Trucker's guide to
mountain pass's advises all to avoid this one at any cost. I did it
once in a 78 bird, never again. Had to disconnect half way up slowed to
a crawl most all the way. Were you showing indications of over heating
before you blew the hose and did you stop immediately when the engine
alarm went off? One more question. What do you mean by steam cleaning
the radiator core? Sorry about you bad luck but it sounds like you
handled it well....Bob 93pt Illinois

WOW! If it's the best you ever had, then you must have owned some
dogs. I would say that whoever owned the coach before you did not
do any of the regular service required on you generator. I have
driven a BB more than 100,000 miles and the most serious problem
I've ever had with a generator is a need to replace the thermostat
and a fuel pump. In the future, get yourself an infrared
thermometer and check the temperature difference between the inlet
side of the radiator and the outlet. It should be a minimum or 15
degrees. If it's much smaller than that, then have it cleaned.

Ron . the only thing that went wrong with gen set is the 1/4 hp blower motor
, we have run the gen set for days on end dry camping and it done great. I
believe what my wife was talking about is the extra room ,the convieance
that are offered and the smooth ride. Dave 91WLPT 40 & 82 FC 35

David:

Having had to re-build a generator during a 4500 mile trip is
pretty major. That generator should have lasted the life of your
ownership. That's the reason for my comment.

David: On a 93 the gen-set cooling fan is 3/4hp 220volts. I just
replaced mine this winter.
Iam really interested in how the 8v-92 got so hot that it
boiled all the antifreeze out. Did it blow a hose? or? Where did the
coolant exit the system? What was the temperature gauge reading ? and
why was the audio-alarm system not alerting you to the problem. Seems
there should have been lots of warning sign's going on before it got
hot enough to score 4 pistons. If you could detail what and how this
happened it would be helpful to the group. Thanks Bob 93pt HOT
illinois. (where in Wyo. did you get the work done)

Dave,

I truly admire your intestinal fortitude and calm attitude with all
those problem on your trip. Can you clear up one thing for me? Like
Bob Howald, I read your original message to be that it was the Detroit
that had to be re-built on the road (yikes!). Ron Marabito read it to
be the generator engine. Which one is correct? In either event, it
was definitely not a pleasant occurance. I am not sure I would be as
pleased if my new-to-me 91 had those problems so soon after purchase.
I look forward to sharing learning experiences with you on the 91s!

Ron. It was the coach engine that shot craps .IJt was from the main raditor
being plugged up.Dave 1991 WLPT 40

Bob; yes it was Alt. rt 14 ,we were up about 8 miles into the climb when the
engine started blowing anti-freeze out the raditor cap. the odd thing my
water temp gauge never got over 220 F the whole time . I have the old
raditor core in my pickup bed ,I's amazing it didn't over heat sooner. You
just touch the fins and they crumble into dust, this goes down two and three
inches into the core. I took it to my raditor repair shop and he said it's
just junk and there is no repair. He said it was from the acids from the
road that rotted the core.

We are planning a trip to Yellowstone from 7/17 - 8/10. We will be
traveling from Louisiana. We understand that the East entrance is
closed due to contruction. We are trying to weight our options on
going in thru the South or North East entrance. Looking for
information from anyone that has gone thru either entrance. Also
any must see sites on the way to or from the Park? Will we have
problems w/length of bird? We will be pulling a Explorer toad. We
are looking to camp our way their and back. Also any passes or
roads that we should avoid? Any suggestions will be gladly
appreciated.
