What did you find out?

>>> "Don Bradner" 11/9/2012 3:17 PM >>>
The HT755 is a 5-speed, but has 6 apparent/effective gears in terms of rpm changing. When flooring mine from a stop, the gear shifts occur approximately at:

0mph 1st gear
18mph 2nd gear unlocked
27mph 2nd gear locked
36mph 3rd gear
45mph 4th gear
60mph 5th gear

Upshifts occur at 2100rpm and drop to 1670rpm

Well...it appears the tech jumped the gun on the "bad injector" being the
problem. He installed the new injector and it still does not fire on that
cylinder. He actually is saying now that when under a load, it appears to be
missing on more then just the one cylinder.

Says he has to dig deeper to find out what's going on....this was a couple of
days ago, haven't heard anything new since then.

I'm beginning to think it may be the "DDEC II"...or something else along the
electronic end. Jerry

Are you sure you don't have a reduction of your air supply. I have not had a problem with my Series 60 diesel but I have had that problem with my Kubota generator. The air supply filter is located low on the engine and on a trip to Alaska on the Alcan highway there was a lot of really dusty highway construction going on and my generator started lugging down and it turned out that the filter had sucked so much dust that it clogged up and only a little air was getting through it. Replaced the filter and the engine ran like a top after that.

Air and fuel filters have been ruled out....he pretty much has it narrowed down
to a computer issue....the tech says he's got a used "DDEC II" that he is going
to install and see if that rectifies the problem.

Has there been many issues with the "DDEC II"? Just wondering if this tech is
on the right track or is he just playing guessing games with me!!!

He should be updating me in a few days. Jerry

A prior owner replaced the DDECII in mine in February, 2003, so there must have
been a problem, I just don't know what. I've heard that person is still a Bird
owner, but he's never been on any forum so I don't know how to ask.

Sluggish 8V92

Just make sure the replacement is a known good one.

Thanks,

Air and fuel filters have been ruled out....he pretty much has it narrowed down to a computer issue....the tech says he's got a used "DDEC II" that he is going to install and see if that rectifies the problem.

Has there been many issues with the "DDEC II"? Just wondering if this tech is on the right track or is he just playing guessing games with me!!!

He should be updating me in a few days. Jerry

Sluggish 8V92
I it is know this sounds simple but many of the DDEC problems are simply bad
grounds. Make sure they are good. There are not really any recurrring issues
with the DDEC II. It is a good unit but parts are no longer available. It can
however be replaced with a more current unit but requires changeout of quite a
few items. I had an issue with a DDEC I that sounds similar to yours and the
guys in our Detroit shop were able to do a workaround. I did get the list of
parts required to update the system and while I don't remember the costs I was
glad to not have to do it. Your best solution if it is not a ground or
connection issue is a used ubit. I don't know if a reman is available.

Sluggish 8V92
Wiring harness and connections checked out okay. A known workable used DDEC
unit was installed and the engine ran fine, so the tech is certain the DDEC is
the problem.

I ordered a unit from a company in MI that I located via "ebay". They are
sending a DDEC programed for the 8V92, ready to install for $600.00 plus
shipping, plus core. Should be here around the middle of the week.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Sounds like it might be worthwhile to find a DDEC for my coach.

Might be better off looking into an upgrade.  I know DD had kits for 1>2 and 2>3, but not sure whats involved or if its worth it.
Also, at least for DDEC2 there where several versions of software.  I havent been able to find out for sure, but I think the latest is .151...

Does anyone know about this stuff?   It would be nice to have a DDEC manual too ;}
