FC quit running
Hey any of you FC owners, brother Dan is traveling in his 86FC and the
engine began loosing power. he stopped and changed the Racor filter.
Started and ran the same, no boost, no smoke, no power.

It has now stopped.

All suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

Jay,

Check the rear electric fuel pump, You should hear it clicking or a
rattle at the rear, front high on the fuel tank. There is a switch
that you can jumper at the oil pressure switch near the oil filters.
Change the front Cat fuel filter, crack an injector or two, let out
the air with the Facet electric fuel pump running. This is how it
works on our 88 FC. We have no hand priming pump. Not sure if the 86
is the same. Is the Racor vacuum gage in the red???
Hope it is a fuel issue.

-Could be air in the fuel. If it will run at all, watch water
separator for air bubbles. If there, may be defective water separator.
I had that situation and replacing H2O separator solved the problem.

Appreciate the suggestions on the Facet pump...

Dan was able to get started again...though can only run in high gear
at 50mph. When a hill climb is required, he must not push the
throttle too hard as he will have symptoms of low fuel delivery(such
as very little or no boost).

When the speed reduces to a point where 3rd gear(of 4 gears)is being
used, the fuel and boost return to normal full power. However, as
soon as 4th gear is engaged, almost immediately, boost level reduces
to 1-2psi and thus away goes the horse power. as we slow down and
then back to 3rd gear, an immediate 10pounds of boost and all the
horses are back.

Going down a hill with throttle wide open, reached about 63mph with
10pounds of boost, then, while continuing the downhill run, the
boost reduced to 1-2pounds and the Bird slowed to 50mph. Where it
will run all day, with 1-3 pounds of boost.

After changing the Racor, it ran bad, as before the change. So he
stopped and changed the secondary fuel filter, reffered to as
the "CAT" filter, I suppose to differentiate from the Racor filter.
Noticed that the fuel level in the Cat filter was down maybe 2
inches in the filter.

Dan replaced the Cat filter with new, primed with the Facet pump and
the little hand primer pump, and the bird started and ran, BUT, NO
CHANGE. Still not making power as it should.

Generator has been running the whole time, no stumbles, no problems.

The Racor gage is at 1 or 2 inches of vacuum, so normal.
The filters are fresh.
The fuel is fresh
The wire to the "Fuel Shut Off Solenoid" is good. By the way, that
wire, if broken, causes the Cat to NOT run at all. Been there done
that.

A fuel delivery issue for sure.

Plans are to remove the bottom bowl from the Racor and clean the
swirl tube and check ball.

What else?

Thanks for all your help!

Jay.
I think you are now beyond my knowledge, maybe the experts will
check in after their 4th July party.
The low fuel in the primary filter should be a clue. Great idea to
clean out the Racor. About a week or two ago there was a thread on
blowing out the fuel lines toward the tank and then forward to the
primary filter with air forced into the racor fuel lines when
disconnected.
Then, I guess it is onto the injectors, Bleed those injectors, until
the fuel runs clear. I can easily reach five of them, and the Cat
always starts.

Thanks everyone for the quick feedback. Made it home at 8pm central time.
Took 8 hours to do a five hour trip. Cat died three times, lack of fuel flow
at high demand. Changed the filters, priming both with the facet pusher
pump on a dash switch we put in. So pump works. Next step is to take racor
apart to try and find something causing flow restriction. Have not had this
problem since fall 03, but its back again now.

Thanks again.

FC quit running
Hi Dan,

Good to hear you drove it home. I think losing only three hours and
arriving home before dark was a real accomplishment, especially
with three delays. I wish I could have been of more help.
I would appreciate knowing what you discover is the problem. We
also had a plugged up Racor after only about 3000 miles on a new
filter.

FC quit running
This may not be applicable, but we had similar experiences on our
DD6v92 which turned out to be aged fuel lines. Everything would work
until we had been running a few hours (the engine compartment warmed
up) and then when you lifted your foot from the throttle, the fuel
line would collapse causing fuel starvation. They looked normal and
the DD shop said they were good.
Just something you might want to check if the fuel lines haven't been
replaced. We replaced and everything works fine.
