Not Much Luck Buying Tires for our WL in San Antonio, TX :( - Stephen Birtles - 05-18-2007 05:43

from a firestone site

"While the Bridgestone R227, M729 and M840 are high quality tyres most
suitable for long haul operation and Firestone FS400 and FD600 are
quality tyres more suited to short haul operation, the Firestone
`Super' range is ideal for any operation and offers exceptional value
for money."

Not Much Luck Buying Tires for our WL in San Antonio, TX :( - Larry - 05-18-2007 14:07

Hi Michael,
Thanks for that update with the 315's... I just bought new 12's this April, so I
plan that I will be using these for the next seven years...

I can tell you based on my experence that 315's have a space issue

with the stock 8.5" rims and spacing that came on my coach. I just

replaced the Michelins with Firestones, the spacing between the

drive axles is just about an inch when the bus is aired up and

running 105 PSI in he drive tires. If I dump the tag the tires

touch. As it turns out, this did not change from the Michelins to

the Firestones, they both appear to have the same sidewall flex.

So be careful if you are looking to go from 12R's to 315's as they

are about 1" wider and cause spacing issues in the drive tires.

Not Much Luck Buying Tires for our WL in San Antonio, TX :( - Larry - 05-18-2007 14:23

Michael
I Did not see, where I was looking when I was researching the BFG's, did it say
that the 315's would be OK on 8.5" rims, they specifically said 9" rims for the
315's, so I did not even give them a second thought... Which I find unusual as
BFG's are made by Michelin... I think the BFG's are just as good as the
Michelin's as they are made in the same plants... And at $132.00 less on each
tire, I think it is worthwhile...

Actually. both the Michelins and Firestones state you can use 315's
on

8.5" rims. The issue really is, does the rim have enough offset to

allow the correct tire spacing between duals.

And I can say that the ones that came on my coach do not as they are

too close for my comfort. But the coach ran on 315's for ten years

before I got it, with 15K a year avg and never had a tire failure.

The tires do not touch when axles are aired up, just really close.

They do touch when the tag is down.

The big concern is, since the spacing is so close, it is possible to

pickup a small stone and take out both tires.

Not Much Luck Buying Tires for our WL in San Antonio, TX :( - mbrund - 05-19-2007 14:40

Not sure about the BF Goodrich 315's, the ones you where looking at
my have been load range L tires. The Firestone FS400 load range L
are also not supported on 8.25", only 9". But the load range J can
be mounted on 8.25" or 9", not sure why, just that both Michelin and
Firestone say that the load range J tires can. Go figure....

specifically said 9" rims for the 315's, so I did not even give them
a second thought... Which I find unusual as BFG's are made by
Michelin... I think the BFG's are just as good as the Michelin's as
they are made in the same plants... And at $132.00 less on each
tire, I think it is worthwhile...
