David, do you think there is a need to etch metal that has been rust pock marked?
Hal, I was thinking por15 may be too brittle for bolt threads but you are right if it is hard it should clean off as the threads pass the nut. One of the problems with buying a coach from a pressure washer nut is all the grease that protected and lubricated the paint, rubber and fine threads is gone.

When i get an old piece of equipment that is caked with grease it is easy to brush diesel fuel on the dried grease to re-wet / re-oil it then remove with a citrus based cleaner. then you can grease it up with diesel and wash with just soap and water. Diesel is more or less just light oil.

I think you'll get much better adhesion if you use POR's metal prep which reacts with the rust to make a strong coating. I think it's a phosphor based acid of which there are many to choose from including the original: naval jelly.
