LED Taillights - Scott Forman - 12-02-2005 14:27

I am new here and am the proud owner of an 82 FCRB35. I am interested
in info on installing LED taillights, specifically where I can purchase
the equipment and what modifications are required.

Thanks

I used standard round bus LED lights, several MFGRs make them, bought
mine at Holland Bus Company but likely any truck supplier or school-bus
dealer will have them for around $35/each.

The stripes are put on after the taillamps so the slight amount of
newly-exposed body on the upper two will not be striped. You'll
probably want to either touch-up or install a round trim-piece to cover
the footprint from the original lights.

When you do the install, run a tail-lamp wire up from the lower one so
that you get four tail-lamps instead of two. The upper light originally
is only brake-turn, no tail.

Can they just be wired straight in with no modifications? Do the
mounting holes in the body line up?

Mounting holes I'm not remembering, but I don't think so as the
original Cat-Eye lights have the screws out on the corners and the
new ones are round, ... thus the witness lines where the stripe
doesn't cover the cream paint on the upper light. I think that the
gasket for the new light just barely covers the old screw-holes.

As far as wiring:

I believe that the tail-lamps can be changed with no wiring
modifications (although I suggest wiring the upper one to the tail-
lamp with the lower one). If you change the side-repeaters and the
front turn-signals also (all turn signals would then be LED) then the
flasher will not blink, I install a dummy load in the overhead at the
large relays, 10ohm-20watt is what I remember using, from Radio
Shack, the big ceramic-style resistors.

Maxxima makes a nice LED clearance light that is as close as I've
found to a direct replacement: It is the same screw-holes and a 1-
wire unit like original, but it is smaller overall so again the light
doesn't cover the old footprint in the stripe (stripes added after
lights, although your '82 has the tape-stripes (through mid-'83)).
Also the Maxxima lights will require that you caulk or silicone-seal
the wire hole when installing so that water doesn't creep in through
the bracket.

Good luck,

Oops, I forgot to tell you all where to find the LED taillight pictures. They
are in the photo section under Jerry'd 85 PT40. Sorry!
