How come my turbo doesn't whistle like most big turbodiesels? Is this
a 3208 thing or do I have a problem? Everything runs fine....

I believe it's because of heavier gauge and short pipes associated
with the turbo on the older 3208's.

The 'whistle' you hear on the bigger engines, and the 3208 ATAAC
engine are likely because of thinner walled turbo pipes and
especially aftercooler piping.

I couldn't hear my turbo very well until I had silenced the engine
noise enough. Now I hear it very faintly every now and then.

The 3208 has two exhaust feed ports and those that are up on turbo issues tell
me that is a problem. I paid a shop $1200 to a shop to "modify" a turbo charger
for me. Net result was nada. Next step bought a big Schweitzer like they use
for the 300 hp Cats. ( $2000) No improvement so I upgraded the nozzles to 375
hp marine spec ($800) and that helped a little. The intake pressure was only 12
or 13 #s.
I came across a part number for a generator/water pump application, only 165 hp
spec. Paid out another $2000 and this time it was a good investment. 16 #s and
great low end performance. Another improvement was the installation of a
thermal blanket kit that covers all the exhaust system and turbo and down pipe.
Really works well now, but most folks don't want to spend the dinero to get
there. Picking up performance with a 3208 is a very hard road and it's best to
leave them as they are. Small improvements are worth getting after like fuel
system delivery enhancements and some claim improvements with propane injection.
The air intake on your 225 could stand upsizing, in fact a new aircleaner
arrangement would be a good thing, not a lot of money and worth pursuing.

Has anybody added a pyrometer or boost guage to the instrument
cluster on these FC 225hp buses? I'd like to know what my turbo is
up to but wasn't sure where to tap in for the gauges. Also would
like to have a trans temp gauge.

Thoughts?

My FC has a auxiliary console on top of the CB, turbo pressure, EGT, trans temp
and air filter restriction gage.
Looks like it was an original option.

Mine has a combo pyro/boost gauge installed on the top of the box
that the CB sits in on top of the dash. The gauge doesn't work, and
even if it did, I would practically have to stand up and the helm to
read it anyway.

Hello Thomas,
I recently had a trans temp gauge installed on our coach by an Allison service
shop when
they replaced our leaking hoses between the transmission and the radiator.
Total cost
with labor was about $300. Now we will know if we're getting into the danger
zone when
we start pulling a mountain pass. I think it's worth the money. Cheaper than
overhauling
the tranny.

We would like to add a turbo boost gauge since we have no indication at this
time. For
what it's worth I have heard turbo whistle we we've up around 2600-2700 rpm.
