This I guess is one of those things a guy ought to know but I thought I
better check to make certain I have it right. To check the trans
level. Engine running and read the level as cold when first started
and the hot level after engine and transmission are warmed up? I
haven't had to check the trans levels on a vehicle in years but I
thought it might not be a bad idea on a vehicle of the age of this BB

Level is the operative word here. The vehicle needs to be level side to side,
front to back for accurate reading. The level markings on the transmission "dip
stick" or scale should face the rear of the vehicle. Make sure the cap is in
the proper position to assure proper depth when fully installed. The engine is
to be a idle, trans in neutral, parking brake set. It is good to check when
drive train is at operating temperature. The level can rise substantially when
at temp.
