Battery question?
Does it seem odd to anyone else besides me, that BB uses 6 volt deep
cycle batteries to start the engine? I like a separate engine starting battery myself. Kerry 82 FC 35 Denver |

Battery question?
Deep cycle batteries work fine for starting the Cat 3208. The thing
you have to worry about is how much energy you pull out of them overnight if you have a lot of power hungry appliances such as a satellite TV, lights etc since those same batteries have to start the Cat the next morning. I am not sure you would want to use them for the Detroit series engines however. You can add them, it's only money.
BB decided to only use the one compartment for batteries, which limited them to four, not enough to use only two for house batteries, so they are dual-purpose. The four 6v GC-6 batteries have plenty of cranking amps, and the GC-6 being designed for deep-cycle use gives the coach the most dry- camping amp-hours and most discharge-charge cycles available (compared to starting or combination batteries). Given the choice of a split bank, four GC-6 batteries, or four 12v starting or marine batteries, I take the additional amp-hours of the GC-6 also. I wrestled with the same concern over not having a split battery
system, mainly due to a boating perspective, as jump starts are harder to get. But after consideration i just went to the 6vt. deep cycle types as Jeff recommends, and i am lucky as my coach has the two "extra" batteries next to the Readi-line, all tied together in one big bank. Two factors tipped the scales for me: First: my 3208 starts when you just look at it...no need for long cranking. Second: if i run batteries down, the generator battery will start the gen, then i can charge the big bank. The gen set is my reserve.
