Best Mobile Internet Service

I'd like to ask those who connect to the internet using Verizon PC cards for
their recommendations. So far I've found four available cards PC5740, V620,
KPC650 and V640. From what Verizon tells me it is the Plan I select that
determines the speed. They say the Broadband Access is the fastest. Is it
your experience that any of the above PC cards will do the job or is one
better than another. Thanks for your info.

I don't know which PC card would be best for your laptop but the EVDO
forum would provide good information.

We have had wireless data card since March of '05. We ordered the
external antenna and that has helped us get connected in low signal
areas.

I read today where Verizon has just added the whole southern tip of
Texas to its EVDO system.

More info:
On the EVDO air card, my laptop has the new express card/34 slot.
My wife's laptop has the PCMIA slot.

(Currently, there are 2 types of Data card formats available:
- PCMCIA (or PC Slot) - this is the PC Slot that is in most laptops
before 2006 (and even still in many new laptops). Some popular
laptops don't have a PC Slot (iBook or PowerBook 12 inch).

- ExpressCard - this is a new format that just started coming out in
2006 and at some point, it will be the primary connection. By 2007,
70% of laptops will have ExpressCards and not PC Slots.

So, if you have a new laptop, determine if it has a PC Slot or an
ExpressCard (BTW, ExpressCard comes in two different sizes 34mm or
54mm sizes, most laptops use the ExpressCard/34 size).)

If we were to do EVDO today, I would buy a package deal off the EVDO
forum link of a Kyocera KR1 Router (the router has a PCMIA EVDO card
slot, then broadcasts wifi to computers in range), with an EVDO
PCMIA card, and an external antenna. I would set up the PCMIA EVDO
card in my wife's laptop, and then from then on have the router
serve both laptops via that card.

This would build a wifi EVDO card "connectivity" network for
computers in range, work at home, and on the road in the coach. You
could then also optionally provide the wifi security code with
coaches parked near you, so they could also connect via your KR1
modem/EVDO card.

I am currently on Comcast cable high speed – but looking into
converting to EVDO for at home and on the road connectivity.

There are many links on the EVDO forum – some lead to verizons site
to determine what speed they offer in your home area.

Hi Rob and group.

I have had the Verizone 5740 for over a year now and really like it. The
speed is not great (National Access) but it is faster than dial up, averaging
about 144kps. What I have found is it is VERY dependable. I have just returned
from upper Maine where I never have internet, but this year Verizon has struck a
deal with U.S. Cellular (and other carries) so I could use my laptop with the PC
card off thier tower, a little slow, but good and reliable. I use the internet
alot and do not want to use my cell phone for connection (which is MUCH slower),
so the PC card perfect for me. The PC card plus my 2 cell phones, with 700
minutes a month, runs me about $144.00. Now that we are permanent residents of
SC and not traveling when I PC card contract (2 years) is up, I may consider
going to a land line and DSL; however in this area, a phone, plus DSL is still
going to cost me about $50-60 a month. AND Charleston is going to get Broadband
for Verizon the first of the year,
jacking the speeds up to 400-700kps, with the same PC card. Verizon's
Technical support is really good and I don't have any complaints about either
service.

One thing you might want to check, is I think two of the PC cards now have
antennas and that might be better, however, the Kyeoca card was almost $200 last
time I checked, and I got the 5740 for free with a two year contract. So I was
just going to hold of buying an antenna'd card until I needed it; but now won't
so that is a moot point.

Howdy.
We purchased Verizon's PC5740 in August this year. My plan is the
Broadband/National Access with Quick2Net. The service is OK, certainly
better than dial-up. BUT the performance depends on the signal
strength. When we were in Fort Worth area and I had a good signal( 2-3
bars), the reception was very good. Now we are in Hondo, 30 miles west
of San Antonio, TX and I have one signal bar and occasionally lose
that and then I just have to wait until the signal comes back. So I am
not really happy with the PC card right now. I considered the card
that has the adjustable external antenna and I regret that I didn't
buy that. I talked to Verizon tech and there is no way to boost the
signal. We are still considering a satellite dish but those too are
very expensive. Just my dollar's worth.

I wanted to share my mobile internet access experiences from today
with the group.

I've got a macbook laptop and have experience with EDGE, EVDO, etc as
a traveling IT consultant for many years. I found none of these
"cellular" options acceptable for more than occasional use.

Today I just bought a Cingular Samsung a707 cell phone because it is
highly rated and sports the new HSDPA 3G high speed data service. I
had no trouble getting connected with bluetooth, my macbook and this
phone. I am using it right now to post this message.

My speeds today have been around 300kbps upload and download (real)
per dslreports speed tests. Others have reported up to 1000kbps
observed speeds. For me this is incredible as the data service is
cheap as an option on a phone plan, I need no cables because I am
using bluetooth, and the phone can be bought for $50 on a new plan
from Cingular or $200 on ebay (I bought on ebay).

Oh also you can talk on the phone and use the internet at the same
time :-)

The downside? HSDPA is only available in major cities right now but
the phone will drop down to EDGE for non-covered areas.

I hope someone else gets some value out of this as I find it very
exciting and affordable / flexible.
