Hi all:
In an earlier post, Ernie had mentioned his problems with his electrical system.
To us who read both forums, Wanderlodge and Wanderlodgeforum, have had a good
discussion regarding surge protection etc.
I had posted that I do not believe in Ernies case it was a surge, but
incorrectly wired, or poorly wired receptacle or plug.
Research by a number of forum members was conducted and was determined that a
device from Progressive Industries called the EMS HW50C would be the correct
thing to purchase.
This device is not just a Surge Protector, but an electrical management system.
It checks voltage, frequency and L-N, L-L, L-G etc, giving one a lot more
protection.

I agree Bill. Ernie's problem was most likely plug related. I have for years,
first on boats and now on the coach, check the plug yearly. Completely
dissemble the plug and check for damage ,i.e. over heating evidence, and tighten
the screws. I have noticed even without over heating damage the screws will
loosen over time. I believe it is called "cold flow". The copper wires
actually move a little due to the pressure of the screw clamp. I've also
noticed this in the main breaker panel, though not as dramatic as the plug.
Probably due to the stranded conductors as opposed to the solid conductors in
the main panel.

If your plug is warm, or even hot, to the touch it is time to check it out.
Especially these 30 amp cords that have a 50 amp plug at the coach. The park
connection should protect with a 30 amp breaker but I have noticed that you
can't depend on that for what ever reason. I once witnessed a power pedestal on
fire across from my boat. It had just caught fire. The reason was, you guessed
it, the boathouse's plug was defective - very loose screws.

FWIW, For some time , I have been using an earlier model EMS PT-50B, portable, I
think that is the model, and have had very good success with it. It has located
pedestal problems on a couple of occasions. BTW, the potental and real benefits
are fabulous at any price, especially $270.00. I would not plug in without it.
One problem without it is to late.

My plug was the original molded plug from the factory. Couldn't take it apart-
doesn't matter, now- going to get new stuff soon.

Dick,
You are correct about cold flow. I used to work with three phase
mainframe water cooled computers, and whenever the electricians
wired up an new plug, they would wait 15 or 20 minutes and go back
and tighten it again. One year there was water running into the
computer room under the raised floor. We went around and lifted the
connectors up and put them on wood blocks. I grabbed the cable from
one of the machines and all 4 wires pulled right out of the
connector. (208 three phase power). Lucky I was at the machine end.

So now once a year, or if I am doing anything electrical in my
house, I tighten the ground and hot connections on my breaker panel.
I just run down where the common and ground wires are connected then
do each breaker connection. They always tighten just a little. (I
don't use excessive force, just s firm twist).I had an electrician
do the mains comming in cause you can't shut them off and I don't
have the proper tools or rubber gloves.

Right Ernie. I was probably thinking of the boat male end. It would not be
possible to check the molded male end as I described. However, I believe that
it is crimped on not screwed inside.
