Johnny. All my auto information states that if you are going to weld on the
vehicle to disconnect the battery. Paul Downey Versailles Ky 83PT 35 ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Can I weld on my exhaust.
My exhaust needs some repair where the stack attaches to the muffler.
Is it possible to weld a new piece of pipe without removing the muffler from the coach. It would be an easy fix if welding will not harm any of the electronics. Any body have any experience doing this. Thanks, Johnny M Slone Pikevile, Ky 98 LXI 41 |

Can I weld on my exhaust.
That's good advise for sure!
But, I've welded on many vehicles, did not disconnect the battery, being sure the ground clamp is close to the area that's getting the weld process; so far so good. I would not put the ground clamp on the front or the rear of the vehicle and weld on the opposite end of the vehicle. On Nov 17, 2007 3:29 PM, > Johnny. Disconnecting the battery is probably a good idea just in case. However, I have
had many exhaust systems installed on cars installed at the muffler shop and I have yet to see a shop disconnect the battery. Curt Sprenger That's good advise for sure! Can I weld on my exhaust.
I weld on many cars and tractors and never disconnect the
battery, 'always intend too'. The added step cant hurt and it is a good practice, 'I forget to put the seat down also'. I welded a few things to my bus and ran a plasma cutter over some steel and only disconnected it from shore power to keep the ground path out of the shore line. I think the key is to grind a very good ground point for the welder to return the current (design a path of least resistance). I can see having the motorhome plugged into shore may prove an issue?? Remember that the weld will repair the result of a problem and a strong weld will pass the weak link to another stress area like a $$$ casted manifold. Some times it is best to fit a sleeve over a crack and U bolt it inplace (allows movement where the crack-failure proved movement is needed) or replace all the rubber hangers and or motormounts that were the cause of the resulted muffler system crack. The failure cause may also have been excessive heat or rust. Can I weld on my exhaust.
I hit a low hanging limb with our farm tractor and cracked the exhaust
where the pipe enters the muffler. I was able to weld the two back together. This has been about 6 years ago and it is still holding today. Just make sure that where you weld is not rusted very much (only surface rust that can be removed). You will need enough metal thickness to support the depth of weld. If you are not a welder, find someone with a MIG or TIG welder to do the work.
